Word For The Day, Thursday, December 13, 2012 – cathexis
dictionaries ad nauseam | 13 December 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cathexis \kuh-THEK-sis\ noun
investment of mental or emotional energy in a person, object, or idea

Example sentences:
"The veil that hides Laura and her eyes, her hair, her smile (and its counterpart, the glove that veils her hand) becomes the object of Petrarch's cathexis...."
— From an essay by Margaret Brose in the 2010 book The Body in Early Modern Italy

"The plot of this French film diverges from ... most American film we are force-fed in that it deals powerfully with subject matter that counts. It treats an almost unrecognized aspect of WWII in Europe, eliciting a strong cathexis from the viewer, who learns so much that he never knew before this celluloid feast."
— From an article by Marion DS Dreyfus in American Thinker, April 8, 2012

Etymology:
You might suspect that "cathexis" derives from a word for "emotion," but in actuality the key concept is "holding." "Cathexis" comes to us by way of New Latin (Latin as used after the medieval period in scientific description or classification) from the Greek word "kathexis," meaning "holding." It can ultimately be traced back (through "katechein," meaning "to hold fast, occupy") to the Greek verb "echein," meaning "to have" or "to hold." "Cathexis" first appeared in print in 1922 in a book about Freud's psychological theories (which also established the plural as "cathexes," as is consistent with Latin), and it is still often used in scientific and specifically psychological contexts.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Nothing succeeds like secession.

It was above freezing by the time I went to the woods-heat wave!

I think all the cathexis over
Petraeus and his secret lover
Would better bring truth to light
If it was focused on the cover-

The stories here, deceptions there
All without any logic or rhyme
Except it happens that the Bengazi
Murders happened at the same time

Obama’s minions aren’t thinking
As they sneak down Nixon’s track-
Once there is a coverup scandal
There is no way to walk it back...

Kitty boy is asleep in the sun as always-creature of habit to the end, it seems-ate two bites, drank water and made his way slowly to his favorite spot in the sun. I really have to admire his determination to end it his way...

I’ve got to deliver an estimate to a customer so snooty she makes me want to scream-waste of time, but we don’t have any other bids right now, and my compadre can’t talk to her at all, lest he start throwing F-bombs and tools-back later...

My fondest hope would be that it would drive the liberals to California and points north when there was no more DHS, etc to pass out government cheese...

There are huge differences between the Nixon problem and Benghazi. No one died at Watergate and the media were anxious to bring the truth to light and get rid of the people responsible. Not this time. A+ for you. I hope the bid goes well.

Little Susie was dreaming of Santa, images of foreign adventures kept her awake...including the position of Secretary of State. She hadn't counted on being on Santa's Naughty List. Everywhere she turned she heard "Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi....it was all so racist... ..........so 4 people died, who cares they were white.....she had spent the last 4 years and invested all her cathexis into Barack Obama...telling lies for him which caused her to land on the Naugty List....and because of this Grinch, who got on her case........but what could he do? He lost to Obama back in '08, he'll fail again - it is his fate. Then along came BarrackaClaus...and then what to her wondering eyes did appear, but the big guy himself with a promise to her.......with a wink and a nod he lead her to believe that the Senate was his and she sighed with relief....she'd get her wish, it was payback time....as he hurried along she heard him call out...... presents for all.......as he strode out of sight.

This 45 yo loser's cathexis almost cost the Beeb his man-bits (if indeed the Beeb has them) and his life.

OMG I had an enormous tub of cashews to use in making Chex mix and cannot find it, texted xsbaby to ask her father if he’d eaten the entire thing (he picked her up for me today) and he was proud to say he had. So he has to stop at the store to replace it for me. What an HUGE pig he is!

You should make the sweet chex mix - it is a huge hit around here!

You just mix together all sorts of sweet things like turtle chex mix, fiddle faddle, caramel covered bugels, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered nuts, etc.

Thank you!

I’m hoping that because there are pissed and grief stricken families, and because there likely are too many witnesses in at least two countries to hush up/buy off the truth will out eventually. Even if the fact-hiders are out of office by that time, I’m pretty sure they can still be charged. Cover ups always come undone, eventally-I just hope someone pays the price this time...

How on earth did he eat an entire tub of nuts and not get the indigestion attack from hell? He must have a titanium digestive system.

MrT5 used to eat mass quantities of pistacio nuts without ill effects-it made me gag to watch. From the time I first knew him, whenever he was on base for anything but work, he’d go to the commissary and buy 2 pounds of the things...
