Word For The Day, Thursday, December 13, 2012 – cathexis
dictionaries ad nauseam | 13 December 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cathexis \kuh-THEK-sis\ noun
investment of mental or emotional energy in a person, object, or idea

Example sentences:
"The veil that hides Laura and her eyes, her hair, her smile (and its counterpart, the glove that veils her hand) becomes the object of Petrarch's cathexis...."
— From an essay by Margaret Brose in the 2010 book The Body in Early Modern Italy

"The plot of this French film diverges from ... most American film we are force-fed in that it deals powerfully with subject matter that counts. It treats an almost unrecognized aspect of WWII in Europe, eliciting a strong cathexis from the viewer, who learns so much that he never knew before this celluloid feast."
— From an article by Marion DS Dreyfus in American Thinker, April 8, 2012

Etymology:
You might suspect that "cathexis" derives from a word for "emotion," but in actuality the key concept is "holding." "Cathexis" comes to us by way of New Latin (Latin as used after the medieval period in scientific description or classification) from the Greek word "kathexis," meaning "holding." It can ultimately be traced back (through "katechein," meaning "to hold fast, occupy") to the Greek verb "echein," meaning "to have" or "to hold." "Cathexis" first appeared in print in 1922 in a book about Freud's psychological theories (which also established the plural as "cathexes," as is consistent with Latin), and it is still often used in scientific and specifically psychological contexts.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

On that note, Rold Gold makes these star shaped pretzels dipped in peppermint white chocolate that had people raving at my book club meeting. Sweet, salty, and minty, the trifecta of delicious.

Perhaps not-but they will be waiting for the other shoe to fall, and that tends to make people careless, as does constantly being “watched over and taken care of”, as Nemesis always says regarding his enemies...

Ick-I’m sure I’m weird, but the thought of that is enough to make me shudder-I don’t like salt much, I don’t like sweet at all, never mind the combination. I do like mint-fresh from the yard as a garnish or flavoring, as a tea, etc...

My SIL makes the sweet kind for my kids, I don’t care for it. And since the soother gave me permission a few years back to make it like I like with no wheat Chex and only cashews etc its much better! Honestly I’m not sure why I felt wedded to the recipe until he said that, but he freed me. Instead of pretzels I use the flat pretzel chips. And it was about a pound and a half of cashews.

A pound and a half!!! And he really didn’t need a case of Tums to go with it?

I like the sound of the pretzel chips and no chex mixture-who has the recipe, please?

I just use rice and corn chex, mini pretzels and cashews.

http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/original-chex-party-mix/2c7708d0-f7ba-423c-954c-128da4606f02

Here’s the basic recipe. I use the same flavoring, but use about 4 cups each of cereal, 1 cup of pretzels and 2 cups of cashews.

Oh, and no microwaving. Set the oven to 250 F and melt the margarine in a big old roasting pan.

When melted, mix in the Worcester and other spices, then toss everything else in.

Bake for one hour, mixing every 15 minutes.

I just tried on a few drops of perfume, and now I smell like Black Flag para hormigas. I ordered the perfume I wear most in winter, and a free sample of this other one came with it-so I dabbed a bit of it on.

I add m&ms to mine. He replaced the cashews so it’s in the oven now. He had to go back to work though. They’re doing something at the world Bank. Honestly I’d rather cut my own eyeball out than drive back into and then out of DC at this hour.

Ant spray? LOL!! Drape lady called, they’re done and she’s coming Saturday to put them back up. She needs to get the awning hooks or whatever you call the doodad that you wrap the cord around to keep them raised. She’s replacing the plastic ones with wood ones.

“over two days tops” Burp!

Exactly like the-made-in-Mexico ant spray I use. The perfume smelled so nice in the little vial-all green and shower-y fresh-apparently, it does not go with my chemistry, because just a few drops on my pulse points reeks of insecticide...

Glad you got the drapes back-and the wooden hooks last a lot longer-we had a little outside awning a few years ago with the plastic ones, and they disintegrated within 6 months. Since the wind took the awning over the cliff and away soon after, it was a moot point...
