Poway girl pepper-sprayed by mail carrier

POWAY, Calif. - The parents of a Poway girl are calling for a postal worker to be fired after he pepper-sprayed their 10-year-old on his route, but 10News discovered the story has another side.

The mail carrier had just delivered mail to a home on Neddick Avenue and was walking away when the dog got out of the home and started running after him.

Ten-year-old Haylee Brown ran after her Boxer named Roxy, which she described as a typical, playful 1-year-old. The fifth grader said she got a hold of the dog's hind legs but the mail carrier must have still felt threatened because he whipped out his pepper spray and fired at the dog.

"And unfortunately, he completely missed the dog and hit my daughter straight on the head,” father J.T. Brown told 10News. "I was livid to say the least."

Haylee said, "My eyes started stinging, so I covered my face and started running towards my house."

I blame the parents. It is the job and the law that a master of a dog keep it in check at all times.

I have known too many masters who thought they were above the leash law.

Haylee is lucky that it was a mailman instead of a cop.

Is there some reason you posted a picture of Michelle Obama?

The dog is described by the family as a “typical, playful, one year old.” I love my dog but I’m willing to bet that the dog wasn’t acting “playful” when he went after the mail carrier. The parents failed to restrain their dog and the fact is, too many mailmen are bitten - sometimes seriously, by dogs. The homeowners are at fault - period.

Heh. That was my first reaction, too.

The dog would be dead and Haylee tazed.

The mail carrier had no choice but to try and defend himself from the DOG. If you are going to own a dog, make sure it does not bolt out the door!

When we had puppies, opening the door was done systematically and carefully. My sons had no doubt that it was a huge deal to keep the dog in the fence or in the house. But it was a major effort on our part of total control until everyone knew how to do it and was mindful of it EVERY time a gate or door was opened. You don’t even open the door until you have figured out where the dog is and that it is under control before you open it!

This is why many people are not able to own dogs without tragedy. They don’t control themsleves and their kids - forget the puppy.
