Magnetic pole shifts are, geologically speaking, rather common. Real pole shifts, where the earths crust slides around—kind of like the loose skin on a tangerine—is a theory.
The waves of earth were suggested in a book I read about Pole shifts in back in my college days. My Geology prof talked about it, and why it would not matter—everything gets wrecked.
Clearly there has been a series of events that have taken the earth back to near zero in terms of life. Usually associated with asteroids hitting.
Magnetic pole shifts would cause some disruption to some navigation issues, but it would not really impact the physical world a whole lot. Certainly not to the degree that a lot of survivalist present.
