Word For The Day, December 18, 2012

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

invigilate [in-vij-uh-leyt]

-vi

1. To keep watch
2. British to keep watch over students at an examination

[1545–55; < Latin invigilātus (past participle of invigilāre to keep watch, stay up late), equivalent to in- in-2 + vigilā- (stem of vigilāre to watch; see vigil) + -tus past participle suffix]

This song suffered a severe bridgectomy for its single version back in the day when radio executives figured people couldn’t bear any song longer than three and a half minutes.

I wish there had been more people to invigilate the elections.

That’s a nice sentiment, but the verb is intransitive — it does not take an object.

Yes. Back from the days when you could both rock and have some vocal harmonies going.

the drivetime DJs were discussing how many pairs of underwear they own. women appear to own far more than men. the consensus was that women own around 20+ pairs or so and men fewer. i have to say i have at least 20-25. more is better so that you are not over a barrel to do laundry every single weekend in order to have fresh ‘gutchies’ for the week.

i have rediscovered some old music lately. Classic vinyl on XM has stuff more jr high to HS. i'd always pretty much listened to later stuff like 80s. Heard this yesterday. could you even say "everywhere is freaks and hairies, dykes and fairies" anymore?

That’s not the important line in that song. It’s:

“Tax the rich, feed the poor.
Till there are no rich no more”

That sums up liberal domestic policy. Note that they don’t want to tax until poverty is eliminated, which might have a rational basis. No, they want to tax because they hate the rich.

Very telling.

Famous last words: Hold my beer and invigilate.

How about: Invigilate OVER the elections? Does that work?

perhaps if Soother had used his word in a sentence, it would be easier for students to observe it’s proper usage...

Did a bit of a draft of our christmas letter and forwarded to xshub. it was damned depressing, i feel bad sending it out! he said he wasn’t able to improve upon it much either!

Despite the fact that we’ve passed the tipping point on the whole western civilization thing, it’s been a pretty darn good year for me. So I guess if I was doing one of those letters, and I’m not, it would be nauseating to read.

:)

this is nuts. Whyisa, i have an idea of a home business for you. Start up cooking for dogs and market it online like this. You don't want a storefront place because there are expenses attached to it, but a home business catering to pets is a $ maker in my opinion. i must have set foot in this store and bought something at some point bc i am on the email list now. It was not a holiday meal for jules and chan, i assure you.
