Check out the texts of William R. Koehler....THAT is dog training. W.Disney pretty much had his choice of dog and animal trainers/handlers and Mr. Koehler did it well. I will have to study/research your recomended so I can learn the new.

The “Koehler Method” has been abandoned by everyone with half a brain.

There is no excuse for the brutality he espouses.

At no point is it acceptable to hang/drown/choke your dog and duct tape and electrocution has no place in dog training.

Please do not use it on any more dogs.

There are many better, more efficient, more humane and more sane alternatives available now.

We are no longer living in the dark ages.

From “The Koehler Method Of Dog Training”

the point where the dog makes his grab.
Before the teeth have reached their target, the dog, weight permitting, is jerked from the ground.

As in coping with some of the afore-mentioned problems,
the dog is suspended in mid-air.

HOWEVER, TO LET THE BITING DOG RECOVER HIS FOOTING WHILE HE STILL HAD STRENGTH TO RENEW THE ATTACK WOULD BE A CRUELTY.

The only justifiable course is to hold him suspended until he has neither the strength nor inclination to renew the fight.

When finally it is obvious that he is physically incapable of expressing his resentment and is lowered to the ground, he will probably stagger loop-legged for a few steps, vomit once or twice, and roll over on his side.

The sight of a dog lying, thick-tongued, on his side, is not pleasant, but do not let it alarm you.

I have dealt with hundreds of these protest biters” and can say, under oath, that even the ones who would appear to be lying most supinely on the threshold of death will get up and walk when a new heel command follows a few minutes of breath-catching

*That* for a dog who nips the leash when heeling?

“Housebreaking” from the Koehler mind:

An indelible impression can sometimes be made by _giving the dog a hard spanking, of long duration, then leaving him tied by the mess he’s made so you can come back at twenty-minute intervals and punish him again for the same thing_.

In most cases, the dog that deliberately does this disagreeable thing cannot be made reliable by the light spanking that some owners seem to think is adequate punishment.

It will be better for your dog, as well as the house, if you _really pour it on him_.

[the ‘spanking’ is achieved with a dowel rod inside of a rubber hose across the dog’s *face*]

Seriously?!?

That is insane bordering on psychotic.

“The Koehler Method” is nothing more than taking lazy, violent “shortcuts” to ‘breaking’ a dog.

Please do not recommend it for anything other than ‘how to turn your dog into a terrified, psychotic, resentful monster’.

It sickens me to know that there are still people out there using this “method”, long after it was roundly debunked as lazy sadism.
