My wife and I are thinking about moving from Knoxville,Tn to Greenfield,Indiana(20 miles east of Indianapolis). The main reason for the move is to be near family members who live in Greenfield and nearby Michigan. Most of the family is in or near Greenfield. We are 78 and 75 years old white married couple in good health and are physically active - Travel, Camping, Golf etc.
The questions we have are relative to the stability of the local economy, the crime statistics, availability of homes in good neighborhoods. We would like a 1500 sq ft - one level home - with an acre or so of land so we can have our Travel Trailer and tow vehicle under cover on our property as well as a two car garage attached to the house. We need a fenced yard for our two Golden Retrievers and an occasion visit of Grandchildren.
We understand the difference in climate and we have been spoiled the last 22 years living in Knoxville,Tn. We usually spend 2-3 months in Florida in January -February-March time period anyway. Being away from multiple Children and Grandchildren is prompting this consideration for moving. Being closer to Family will be helpful when we really get old.
If you’re a true southerner check it out first. People in the midwest can be unfriendly to outsiders and southerners. Believe the corruption it is real.
Tam Keel isn’t the kind of person that a mugger hopes to encounter. She got her Blackwater hat from Blackwater, spent most of her employed years working in various gun stores, and takes part in various shooting competitions.
With more people like here, Broad Ripple would have fewer muggers (above ground).
I think being in Indy puts you far enough away from that Toll Road that Governor Daniels sold off to the Spanish company, so you won’t get raked over the coals as the Spanish start turning the screws on that part of the state.
In other words, you’ll be fine there.
My wife is from Greenfield and we attend church there. It’s a decent community, fairly small, still a lot of farmland in that area. You should have no problem finding a reasonably-priced house, however a house with more than a half-acre of land might be a tougher find unless you want a fixer-upper. Not much in the way of shopping within Greenfield itself (it does have a Walmart), but there’s plenty of shopping, golf, other entertainment closer to Indianapolis which isn’t far. I’ve lived in central Indiana since 1991 and I do like it, apart from the occasional cold winter.
Thank you fellow FReepers for the valuable information. My wife and I appreciate your time and effort.
