dictionaries ad nauseam | 27 December 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stridulous \STRIJ-uh-luhs\, adjective
1. Also, strid·u·lant. Making or having a harsh or grating sound.
2. Pathology. Pertaining to or characterized by stridor.

Example sentences:
He was about to leave when a stridulous voice cut through the din.
-- Stephen Marlowe, The Death and Life of Miguel De Cervantes

But at this moment the long-drawn, slightly stridulous utterances of Mrs. Brimmer rose through the other greetings like a lazy east wind.
-- The Writings of Bret Harte, The Crusade of the Excelsior

Etymology:
Stridulous came from the Latin word stridulus meaning "giving a shrill sound, creaking" from stridere meaning "to utter an inarticulate sound, grate, creak."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

NYCity has more restrictive laws than we do. Not a problem up here...liberals have guns and lots of them here.

We needed a RR and we got a Mitt the Kitten. Mitt’s son now says he didn’t want the presidency after all? RME Sadly, Americans have lived on credit so long they have no idea the fallout that is coming. We are going to hurt when it all falls apart. Obama has no substance to him to even see the writing on the wall. My time to own a gun is coming.

MR got even more of the white vote than RR did.

The problem is that it was decided in 1965 to start changing the ethnic mix of this nation to one that tolerated corruption and socialism by importing millions of people from corrupt socialist nations.

Worked like a charm.

And I say this with all due respect to conservative minorities.

I am still pissed off that Mitt’s son would say such a thing....go ahead...on top of the loss insult your supporters like that.

Those are ILLEGAL votes, not American citizens voting. We need to stop that.

You could join the LIB* caucus.

*Let It Burn.

It really is a great question: What is a conservative to do when there is nothing left to conserve?

Not many sounds are more stridulous than the voice of Baba Wawa. She's also gotten rather pornographic in her dotage.

I think I’m going to be sick. The best comment on that thread was along the lines of people wonder why we don’t respect him. There you have it. Even the kiss-up media don’t have any respect for him. A+ for you.

It is 56, gray and gloomy-

I’m so tired of emperor Obama
That I mute the volume down-
So as not to torture my ears
Hearing that stridulous sound

He loves to hear himself talk
More than any other person could-
An endless flood of useless words
That don’t do anyone any good

In high office, an ego like his
Is a tidbit bound to tempt fate-
As if he is possessed by Nixon
As he designs his own watergate...

I swear, he reminds me more of Nixon every time he opens his mouth-the ego, the paranoia, the mob mentality and connections, etc, etc...

Well, I don’t believe that the economy can’t survive without the extra trillion a year Obama has been spending. So we can conserve the federal budget back to the pre-TARP levels.

I was not aware you did not have a gun, but living where everyone has them, I guess I forget it is not the same where everyone else is...

Today was one of those days that just surprises me. We had about a foot of snow unload on us since Wednesday afternoon till this morning. DH got up to go out to snow blow it all away and our neighbor has a new snow blower and was out there doing our driveway. A couple of years ago he had had surgery and we have done his ever since. Even when they are out of town...they would come back to their driveway, sidewalk and porch all done. DH waited till he was done, then got out his own to go get our elderly neighbors cleaned out....our other neighbor across the street got a new snow blower as well and got some of his regular stops. He did spend about three hours helping out with the neighborhood driveways. Our second neighbor even got the end of the driveway with all the plowed sludge for his neighbor that he doesn’t even speak to. They have feuded forever. With good reason. I was amazed at that. I have great neighbors. Our neighbor up the street got all the driveways there except for one, DH went up to do that one, too. I asked DH to go in the other direction to get my elderly friend’s double driveway, but her next door neighbor already did that one, too. The little old ladies like to bring him baked goods after a heavy snowfall like this one. They are so sweet.
