dictionaries ad nauseam | 27 December 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stridulous \STRIJ-uh-luhs\, adjective
1. Also, strid·u·lant. Making or having a harsh or grating sound.
2. Pathology. Pertaining to or characterized by stridor.

Example sentences:
He was about to leave when a stridulous voice cut through the din.
-- Stephen Marlowe, The Death and Life of Miguel De Cervantes

But at this moment the long-drawn, slightly stridulous utterances of Mrs. Brimmer rose through the other greetings like a lazy east wind.
-- The Writings of Bret Harte, The Crusade of the Excelsior

Etymology:
Stridulous came from the Latin word stridulus meaning "giving a shrill sound, creaking" from stridere meaning "to utter an inarticulate sound, grate, creak."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

He’s not half as intelligent though. And Nixon was a hard worker unlike this guy who prefers to play golf every chance he gets and doesn’t even read. A+ for you.

At the risk of sounding mean, if I were in charge, I’d just summarily close down Carter’s darlings-the EPA, department of Education, and all the hang-on programs they have spawned, cut the DHS to the bone, starting with Obamacare and all the tentacles it grew, and I’d turn a totally deaf ear to anyone who started howling about the children and poor illegal immigrants, snail darters, etc-there are sensible and sustainable ways to take care of the environment without ever moving a single bug or plant into a new area.

Then cut IRS in half by trashing the tax code and starting over with a flat tax or the like-how much did that save already?

Then I’d start posting rewards for anyone who reports provable waste in any program. Give most responsibility back to the states-those that want to be socialist hell holes will attract the appropriate residents-welfare queens, Pollyanna lunatics and illegals , but at least they won’t want to come to the states where you need a work ethic and the ability to be color blind like MLK saw us doing, because no one would even listen to them-we could all just be Americans again...

I read an idea a long time ago that still seem good. We should have an agency that feasts on the waste of other agencies. Some sort of equitable split, maybe 25/75. The agency lives on its cut and the bulk of the savings is returned to the treasury.

Lots of double double negatives there.

But right now I'd settle for 2007 (pre-TARP, pre-stimulus) but we are never going to get there because the FSATM is too large

Thank you! It wouldn’t be likely to work without a lot of hand wringing, but that is what would make it fun to watch for all of us who have had to listen to whining liberals since we were kids...

I like that-it is simple and it is how a septic tank works, more or less-the beneficial bacteria feed off the waste...
