'Whatever' slips in annoying words poll

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., - "Whatever" remains the most annoying word or phrase in the English language, a poll indicates.

"Like" and "you know" trailed in the show and place positions, the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., reported Thursday.

Almost one-third, 32 percent, of the adults surveyed selected "whatever." Another 21 percent picked "like" and 17 percent "you know."

"Just sayin" was the only other phrase to break into double digits at 10 percent. Another 9 percent picked "Twitterverse" and 5 percent "gotcha."

"Whatever" has now been in the top spot for four years running. But it has lost ground from last year when 38 percent found it most annoying.

Older respondents, non-college graduates and people with incomes under $50,000 were more likely to be annoyed by "whatever." Respondents under 45, college graduates and those with larger incomes tended to go for "like."

Marist surveyed 1,246 adults by telephone Dec. 4-6. The margin of error is 2.8 percentage points.

Supposably “whatever” has slipped a bit, but irregardless it is still annoying.

The over usage of the word “like” borders on criminal and insane. “So I was like...” Other words are “literally” and “amazing.” The combination of “like literally” or “literally like” is painful.

The most annoying word is “democrat”.

I like find telephone poll more annoying than whatever word you know.

But that goes with saying you know.

I agree with you on the over use of the word “like”. It is so widespread that now it is revolting! The word “exactly” used to bother me but I am hearing that less and less. “Whatever” doesn't bother me because I can understand the meaning, it means “so what” but the insertion of “like” into every sentence is nuts!

“Exactly” is now surpassed by “actually.”

I’m seeing “conversating” being used more these days. The folks using it in place of conversing are often in the interview rooms on the tv series The First 48.

'Dude' is the most annoying word ever.

In combination with a couple of other words on the list, you get phrases that are thought to incite otherwise ordinary citizens to contemplate mass murder with a spoon, e.g.
