A few years ago I had an adobe program that was from a place that sold it to me for a fraction of the cost from adobe. Turns out it was not licensed by adobe, but it worked fine. After running the Belarc program the next time I started that program I got a popup screen that said I needed to enter my authorization code, which of course I didn't have. I don't believe it was coincidence. Now that all of my programs are legit I don't worry about that, but that was my personal experience.

Dunno......but what I can say is that Belarc had zip to do with it. It doesn’t check “authenticity”; nothing of the sort. It “catalogs” what is on your system, period.

It sure does catalog. Drivers, licence codes, software versions, everything. It would be a snap for it to repot back to the software makers sites. I don’t believe in coincidence.

Trust me.....they don’t. Frankly, if they did, do you think millions would have downloaded it and used it all these years?

I didn’t check back in on this post, but now that I have, would you care to expound on your “evil little person” comment? I suppose there may be exceptions, but as an IT professional, I’ve found that more often than not, driver updates are very useful and should be performed in most cases.

Oh sure. A developer that offers free software would never find a way to make money from big software companies by sharing information from a computer that they just scanned for everything under the sun. They make freeware like that because they are altruists and just want to help people. Right. By the way, you can send me your social security number and bank information. I promise not to do anything with it. Trust me.

I have found that an unsettling percentage of the time driver updates will cause more problems than they fix. I was the unfortunate first discoverer of a bug in an update that rendered a program I was using inoperable.
