The problem with the Vikings -- speaking of Fran Tarkenton -- is that being Minnesotan, they were too enamored of "Minnesota nice" to ever air the ball out downfield the way Kenny Stabler used to.

It's like the Twins -- despite being among the best hitting teams in baseball, like, forever (Killebrew, Tovar, Carew, Oliva), they never won; so the Vikes, with some of the best receivers in the NFL over and over, never did more than rinky-dink 5- and 10-yard passes.

That's what makes Adrian Peterson so amazing: the Vikings winning with a running back? Maybe Tom Clancy's plot in The Sum of All Fears is more realistic than I thought. (The Vikes were in the Super Bowl due to a running back, when the nuke blew it up.)

I recall the Vikings in the 70’s winning with a running back by the name of Chuck Foreman.
