RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) Months after an unusual stench blanketed parts of Southern California, local smog regulators have approved a $200,000 system to monitor the stench, it was reported Saturday.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) plans to establish two stations near the Salton Sea to warn people when the odor reaches critical levels.
The stench apparently spawned from either a fish die-off at the Salton Sea or disturbed sea floors that released methane gas from rotting sea life.
Hundreds of concerned citizens reported the foul odor to authorities last September. It plagued several communities including Indio, Palm Springs, Riverside, Pomona and the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys.
Sam Atwood, a spokesman for AQMD, says the new monitoring system will also help fire agencies decipher whether future stenches are from the lake or other sources.
NORAD already "tracks" Santa for one evening ... just aim a little more south and track the stench.
Monitor, indeed !
HMMPPHHH, BAH! HUMBUG !!!

A $200,000 system to tell people they are smelling something bad.
Contracts like this NEVER come my way.
I wonder what the staffing/maintenance costs of this system is?

Back in the 60’s the Salton Sea was a happening place. Now it’s dead and rotten.
Install some of their wind farms over there and blow it into Arizona.
Actually back in the 50’s when LA had so much smog one of the councilmen or Mayor wanted to build giant fans to blow it out of the city towards Riverside.
The “making” of the Salton Sea is a pretty funny story btw. Man-made disaster of Colorado River water re-routing plan that went terribly wrong. 1909 or so. Saved by the Union Pacific (or So. Pacific) railorad sending down boulders meant for the construction of the new LA harbor to block up the ditch.

Well, since we're probably talking about public union environmental scientists, I figure that $200,000 a year would probably get you one scientist. Just a guess, of course.
For room and board plus free internet access and $150,000 , I’ll tell them when teh lake smells. They will be saving money and employing a scientist.

I think their noses will give them sufficient warning about the stench. And 200 grand will buy lots of nose plugs.
You have to have a nose for contracts like this —
