I heard someone on hockey radio long before it ended talking about the situation. Someone made the point that EVERYONE should be interested in enlarging the pie, that their interests are all intertwined. Instead of thinking about enlarging the pie, popularizing the sport, getting more behinds in seats for games etc. they concentrated on cutting the pie to their own side’s advantage. so if the pie shrinks down to the size of one of those hostess single serve pies that men carry in their lunch pails, how is anyone’s interest served?
The NHL is in a weak position as well. Unlike the other major sports in the US, there are alternative leagues in other countries for players to play in.
Interesting about the guaranteed pensions. As the rest of the world moves away from such, the NHL sets up its own welfare state.
