FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) -- A federal judge on Friday barred the IRS from imposing a series of new regulations, including a competency exam, on hundreds of thousands of tax preparers.
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington ruled against the IRS in favor of three tax preparers who filed suit last year with the help of a libertarian legal group, the Arlington, Va.-based Institute for Justice.
Since 2011, in response to what it says has been a growing problem of poorly done returns, the IRS has sought to impose a series of new regulations on tax preparers. That included a requirement to pass a qualifying exam, paying an annual application fee, and taking 15 hours annually of continuing-education courses.

But of course, they failed to mention that both the IRS and major corporate tax preparers were worse than most small company preparers and individuals. Additionally, many of the errors cited by the IRS auditors were for things like touching the lines, wrong color or shade of ink, and other trivial errors which they don’t call on themselves. Additionally, they are at the 90% error level of providing answers to questions and then legally not standing behind those answers.
We would’nt need to woory about this crap if we had a fair tax!
Bump!
No, it is happening now. Many have already taken it. Prometrics is administering the exam. Current PTIN holders have until 12/31/2013 to pass the exam (it is pass/fail) or not have their PTIN renewed. Money has been spent and review courses taken. I'd be a little po'ed if the program was not at least continued as optional.
We would not need to worry about this if America was a free country. (And before the income tax amendment , it was).It made the rest of the constitution worthless because it gave the feds power to take away everything. The amazing thing is America has lasted this long after that cancerous addition.
See tagline.
Spot on! Guess I should stop ignoring those tag lines.

The IRS did not file the suit but were respondents to the suit.
LOL, the IRS wanted to impose 15 hours of propaganda on tax preparers!
In this case, procrastination has proved to be a great virtue! :-) I hope this decision is upheld if the rev’nooers decide to appeal.
The IRS should not have fought this law suit.
Cease and desist, comes to mind as their proper response.
The size and scope of the Federal government needs at least a 33% cut, and I do not include the DOD in that number.
