Old Believers are a kind of Amish.
Most fled Russia after communist takeover, thus they were persecuted much earlier.
Most of them are living in South America, Australia, United States and kept their lifestyles.

I have read other stories of Christians who fled into the Russian wilderness to escape persecution but none like this.

In my opinion this is a story about how a manic delusion led a family into decades of isolation and deprivation. Sad.

Lacking guns and even bows, they could hunt only by digging traps or pursuing prey across the mountains until the animals collapsed from exhaustion. Dmitry built up astonishing endurance, and could hunt barefoot in winter, sometimes returning to the hut after several days, having slept in the open in 40 degrees of frost, a young elk across his shoulders.
OK. Remind me never to complain about anything in my life again.
