If you are driving between the two on I-35, make a stop in Waco. Waco is similar to Austin, but without the weirdness and the hippies.

There is the Texas Ranger Museum.

I think Waco is wonderful! And I can understand why Ken Starr (yes, that one) fled the leftist Malibu, California area for God's Country of Central Texas to take on the presidency of Baylor University.

By the way, here's a link to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum just off I-35 north of Waco. It's a great place to visit, both fun and educational.

I agree. The museum also offer visitors a chance to pull out a Ranger’s revolver and experience how heavy it feels (.44 or .45 caliber with a long barrel). There’s lots to see at the museum.
