Dog reunited with family after 4 years

PALO ALTO, Calif.,- A Palo Alto, Calif., family says their missing dog "Oreo" finally returned home after being gone for more than four years.

Oreo, a Boston terrier, went missing from his owner's yard more than four years ago, the Palo Alto Daily News reported.

The Peninsula Humane Society and Oreo's owners say the dog and his family were finally reunited largely because of a microchip that was implanted under Oreo's skin. The device was encoded with his family's contact information.

Oreo was found Tuesday wandering near the Security Public Storage in Daly City, and the microchip was detected during an exam at the Humane Society in San Mateo, officials said.

"To get a dog back that you thought was gone for good is pretty crazy," said Brandon Springer, adding Oreo belonged to his grandmother, Ann Guglielmelli, who died last May. "It shows that it does work."

"This story illustrates the importance of microchips, which can be a lost pet's ticket home," said Scott Delucchi, a spokesman for the Humane Society. "Too many people don't know how inexpensive this can be and how easy of a process it is. Hopefully, this happy ending will cause more people to consider this permanent form of identification for their pets."

They should start putting GPS trackers in those microchips so you can locate them as soon as they are missing.

This story makes me so happy. Yes... it would have been nicer if the dog was found before his owner passed. However, the family now has the opportunity to love/take care of a pet that she loved. I have the feeling she is smiling in Heaven!

Reminds me of our Boston in her much, MUCH younger days. She is so old now.. poor thing. All gray around the face and a lot slower walking and getting up. What cracks me up is she will still get a bit ornery with our GSD if she thinks he is annoying her. Wow.. ever see a huge GSD run from an old Boston?! Gotta laugh. Hugs, Mom

Cool. A collar with GPS is great for lost dogs but a dog thief could take it off.
