EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A teenaged boy and girl severed their fingers during a game of tug-of-war at South El Monte High School Monday.

The accident happened during lunchtime homecoming week celebrations at the school, located at 1001 Durfee Avenue.

“They wrapped the rope around their hands and somehow the rope when on to snap, I guess it created some extra tension and caused the injuries,” Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Brian Riley told KNX 1070.

The boy reportedly lost four fingers. Officials did not say how many fingers the female student lost.

Both students are reportedly athletes at the school.

Both students were transported to a local hospital where doctors attempted to reattach their fingers.

No additional details were released

Damn, hope they have luck reattaching those fingers!

Amazing how many people get maimed or even killed in tug-of-war contests when the rope snaps. (Hint: Never ever wrap the rope around body parts you might need at a later time.)

Of course, had they been science nerds instead of athletes, they might have heard about a concept called ‘conservation of energy’. When that rope goes, the stored energy is released and does the nasty stuff.

During emt class I saw aftermath photos of a severed limb from a tug-of-war accident ... watch what you’re doing with the rope, and your fellow participants.

In a contest of Tug-of-War, follow these two simple rules:

1) Wear Gloves

2) NEVER wrap the rope around an appendage.

Major, deserved liability for the school. These children had no idea the magnitude of the risk they were assuming. Maybe a tug or war with 5 or less on each side is ok, but not large groups.

At least no concussions, right. Way safer than football.

as a further advisory to tug-of-war particpants: never put rope between legs...

You’d think such warnings wouldn’t be necessary, but...

Never use nylon rope. Stretches then snaps like a rubber band.
Swings around and causes injuries.

There is a school district going to lose a few million

If any of these athletes can demonstrate any future with their athletic ability...it will cost the school. Double for the girl....since she will get more $$ for cosmetic damages
