Truman Deployment Cancelled

CVN 75, scheduled to deploy this week, cancelled.

The Pentagon this afternoon released a statement announcing the delay of the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman and the USS Gettysburg.

The carriers were scheduled to leave Norfolk later this week.

Below is a portion of the released statement of Pentagon Press Secretary George Little:

"The secretary of defense has delayed the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) and the USS Gettysburg (CG-64). "Facing budget uncertainty -- including a continuing resolution and the looming potential for across-the-board sequestration cuts -- the U.S. Navy made this request to the secretary and he approved. This prudent decision enables the U.S. Navy to maintain these ships to deploy on short notice in the event they are needed to respond to national security contingencies.

The old “We’ll cut things people don’t want to see cut until they scream for tax hikes!”

Why did you change the title from “delayed” to cancelled?

The canceled deployment is the most dramatic evidence yet that tight defense spending will affect life in Hampton Roads, which depends heavily on military and defense spending.

BS. Now the Pentagon has become politicized.

You are exactly spot-on with this assessment. This whole sequestration nonsense is over-blown drama. The cuts are barely significant - they cut only the rate of growth of their budgets; it's not like these jackasses are going to have their precious bank accounts emptied out. This deployment was planned and funded already with FY13 budget which is in place already. What a bunch of prom queens.

This is nothing more than the Pentagon yanking CONgresses short-hairies to keep the money spigot flowing. You can bet if that carrier is suddenly needed on station, it'll be out of Norfolk so fast your head will spin.

Oh, and it gives tragedy TV more fake drama to divert the sheep.

Whatever happened to the days when it was nobody's G.D. business where navy ships were, or weren't?

I was of the impression the Abe was going in for it’s half-life refuelling.

Because my boy is on the ship. They actually deployed 2 weeks ago then returned Monday. That alone was very weird. We spoke yesterday AM, and at that time he expected to be restarting the deployment on Friday. They already have the air wing on the ship, so you don’t “delay” with the planes on board. Now they will have to go back out to sea just so they can fly the planes back off the boat ... and no, they will not just let the planes sit there. When the ship is in port, the planes are on land. This is absolutely non-trivial, but like most things, it is being ignored in the media.

Part of the cuts includes the money that was to be used to refuel Abe.

A deployment of a ship named after the President who said “the buck stops here” is canceled by the ‘buck-passer in chief’.
