When did they start naming snowstorms?

It wasn't the National Weather Service. It was one of the alphabet networks. I think NBC. There is no official designation for naming snowstorms.

I believe it was the Weather Channel. It gives them a shorthand way to talk about the storms. Right now they're still talking about 'Nemo' in the Northeast, and 'Orka' in the Western Plains.
