“Patti Smith?”

Not for the faint of heart - and not normally on Conservative’s play-lists.

Reminds me of when Joe Strummer died (The Clash) - a good number of National Review writers not only knew who he was - but were well-versed in his music.

‘Ya never know.

"Little Mother" by Vaughn De Leath expresses my feelings about my own mother, who passed away a year and a half ago. Baby Your Mother, her hit from the early weeks of 1928, was practically my theme song during the years that my mother's health was declining.

I used Jo Stafford's version of "No Other Love" in a video that I made of my brother's wedding.

In The Blues Have Got Me (1924), Jane Green mounts a spirited defense of 1920's-style jazz- "I like a band that can hang out a rhythm hot; that's music to me...if blues are killing, let me pass away at seven; you needn't worry me, I'll Charleston up in heaven."

Going down Vangelis memory lane the other night on an FR thread I had posted, I remembered his pairing with Jon Anderson of Yes. Found this one that I had never heard before...love song...it’s very delicate and beautiful to me:

Jon & Vangelis Genevieve
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQMznnxmF1A
GENEVIEVE

Genevieve,
Listen for a while.
We are young,
Waking all the time.
Growing as we do,
See the truth we lose,
How we soon forget
This love.

Genevieve,
Tell me if you can.
Who is right,
A woman or a man ?
How we grow the same. (to see who doesn’t cry)
Together we create. (the circles round my heart )
Sing, all the world is in (a girl for every boy)
Our eyes. (Genevive)

Genevieve. (Genevieve)

Flying to the sky, (flying to the sky)
Holding me this way, (gliding through the sky)
This magic that I feel (magic that is in your eyes)
For you.

Genevieve,
The strongest love of all
Is when we’re one
Whenever we’re alone.
There’s nothing like our love (everybody knows)
That fills this empty space. (the children of the world)
Just let me hear you say (everyday begins love)
It’s true.

The way you think of love (show how to believe)
Is in my heart of love. (in this make believe)
This love for everyone, (make each day begin with love)
Genevieve. (love love love....)

Everybody knows.
For the children of the world.
Every day begins
With loving...

Used to listen to the Chris Isaak album all the time. Reminded me a little of Roy Orbison...speaking of which, now there are some love songs. Nobody did it like Roy, IMHO.

Love you Dear Roy...a piece of heaven on Earth.

Roy Orbison - In Dreams

Roy Orbison - In Dreams ( live Black and white night)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6Xj72bP0ToSongwriters:

Orbison, Roy
“In Dreams” by Roy Orbison

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper:
“Go to sleep, everything is alright”

I close my eyes
Then I drift away
Into the magic night
I softly sway
Oh smile and pray
Like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep
To dream my dreams of you

In dreams...I walk with you
In dreams...I talk to you
In dreams...Your mine

All of the time
We’re together
In dreams...In dreams

But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can’t help it...I can’t help it
If I cry
I remember
That you said goodbye
To end all these things
And I’ll be happy in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams

I was reminded of this one the other day too...first part is good, but the love song, a different kind of love song...but very beautiful,,.starts approximately at the 5 minute 42 second mark. First part is from a movie or as if it is from a movie then singing by Jon Anderson.

Jon and Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_PBU9a8FQY#t=05m42s

Man: Come with me to the far lands of Baghdad.
Woman: Oh, if only I could. That’s what I want more than anything in the world, but it could never be...
Man: Of course it can...
Woman: But my father would find us wherever we went. Yes, he has forbidden me to... to even speak to you, if he finds me now. I don’t know what he’d do...
Man: But he doesn’t know that I’m... I’m a prince. Before, I was the thief of Baghdad now...
Woman: It doesn’t matter...
Man: Then follow me, darling, follow me now to the ends of the Earth

One on one to talk to you
Like film stars they get close to you
You’ve mirrored his appeal
He wants you so, he wants to be beside you
Then you pass by giving him the other side of you
Like the mystics do
So that every time he moves, he moves for you

Soul and light can always see
The meeting of true love and she
This silent night and I,
I guess a lonely mind might see

I’ve seen love on the screen
I’ve seen a screen goddesss and me-oh
How often this, how often, this the power of you
And so, I must confess
Whatever I see
I’m meant to be there with you
With you with you

Silent golden movies, talkies, technicolour, long ago
My younger ways stand clearer, clearer than my footprints
Stardom greats I’ve followed closely Closer than the nearest heartbeat
Longer that expected-ther were great-
Oh love oh love just to see them
Acting on the silver screen, oh my
Clark Gable, Fairbanks, Maureen O’Sullivan
Fantasy would fill my life and I
Love fantasy so much
Did you see in the morning light
I really talked, yes I did, to Gods early dawning light
And I was privileged to be as I am to this day
To be with you. To be with you

[movie actor like speech:]
Mr. Cairo: Listen. I have arranged this display for... for all of you people to... to come here this evening and I... I know you have been searched, but, what you... you don’t realize is, is that in the back of the Maltese Falcon, I have it ...
