Most of you here felt 'that moment' a long time ago, when you were too young to vote, too young even to get behind the wheel. You may not even remember when it happened. My Rite of Passage was today. I went to Big 5 and purchased a 12 gauge shotgun. I actually won't be able to drive my 'new friend' home until later this month, after a background check. Hopefully, there is no evildoer using my full name while commiting their evil deeds. I'm legally clean though, never even been arrested (yet).
I purchased a box of bullets, and a zip-up gun case. When I return for the gun, I'll need to buy a gun lock. Once I have access to the gun, it is likely to lay idle and locked away, until I can take a class at a local firing range for beginner gun handling. Today I was shown how to open and load the shotgun, very simple procedure, thank the Lord. The young man at the counter was patient and respectful. I was glad for that. I already felt foolish for my scant knowledge of firearms. My Dad had two guns back at home. one named Brown Betsy, the other named Black Beauty. Sharing the family home with guns was easy, my sisters and I followed the house rules and just never tampered with them at all. I learned a little while in the Navy, but not much, nothing that was repeated. I made an effort not to let on just how excited I was, that, in itself might raise an eyebrow. Just why is that guy so 'happy' about buying a gun, when he knows so little about them. I played it sort of cool.
As I get older, arthritis has taken me out of my Karate class, till I can pay for private lessons. Otherwise, I would slow the whole class down. (Un-Good!, to make up an expression) I used to love Boxing or Sparring night in Karate. Practicing chokeholds too. Maybe sometime down the line, but not now. What I can do now is to use my sharp vision. I'll look into skeet shooting. So much to learn!
I told the manager he would make even more money if he had a photographer ready to snap a picture of the owner with his or her new gun. I absolutely would have pulled out a few bills and paid for such a momento. It was that much fun.

Some new guns already come with trigger locks in the box. What brand/model did you buy?
My first gun was a Remington model 514 single shot .22. It was for Christmas when I was 9. The model 514 is considered to be a desirable tho not expensive gun but mine was really not very good.
The extractor eventually stopped working and I would have to pry the empty case out with a pocket knife. My older Brother had a Remington 513 scoremaster and it was a far, far better rifle than mine. functioned perfectly and was more accurate too.
One day I bought a box of .22 WRF thinking it would work in my rifle. Of course it was slightly larger so I did a really crude rechambering with nothing but a drill. I did such a crude job that empties would be out of round when extracted. Interestingly despite my crude work, it just on it’s own began to extract the WRF cases. It also was far more accurate I am sure because the WRF was just a couple of thousandths of an inch greater in diameter.
Apparently one reason it had shot poorly to start with was the bore was oversize slightly.

Last summer for my 42nd b-day, Springfield XDm 3.8 compact in .40. Been on a badly timed binge since then.
It’s never too late. My. First gun was a Glock 17 which i still have 15 years later.
Very new member, odd that you didn’t identify the model you purchased.
A bolt action Mossberg 20 ga. with a poly choke in 1957. I killed my first Canadian Honker while playing hooky from school a couple of weeks later when I was ten years old.
Congratulations on your purchase. I can’t believe no one has asked what the heck you bought yet! What did you get???
My first was a S&W Model 10 (.38 Spl). Many more since.
I applaud your intent to get some training on your new gat. You can call the NRA and get some local instructors with bona fides.
You’re a relatively new FReeper, but it looks like you’re having a good time. I look forward to some reports from occupied California.

First was a 16 gauge Ithica when I was 18
I lost it in the “war”.
I got it used in 1965 when I was 8. It was made in 1936 and has that date stamped into the Bakelite trigger guard. I still have it and the original 3x9 variable power scope. It's an incredibly accurate heavy barreled plinker.

I owned one of those hoglegs about 20 years ago.
First firearm i dropped the hammer on was a .357 S&W 19. For years i thought i was 9 at the time. My Dad recently corrected me. I was 7.
It was his service pistol for over 20 years until he switched up to an automatic while a Deputy.
He gave it to me after my Son was born and told me i was not allowed to sell it. It’s no save Queen and sees regular range time.
I’d sell a kidney before ever contemplating getting rid of it.

Just bought a Mossberg for the wife at Big 5 it was on sale.I told her just point and shoot,friends will bring her to the range and show her how to use it.
She is excited cant wait to go to the range.
