Downton Abbey, could we have a thread where somebody would explain what is going on?

Posted on 02/17/2013 5:46:52 PM PST by FoxPro

I am a fan, but I cant catch all of it (kids and cooking and so forth).

Is there a place where we could "catch up" with the goings on?

Like who is messing who up?

Historical references?

Maybe on FR?

Thanks in advance, Jeff.

A lot of things are happening simultaneously. It really starts somewhere in the 1910’s prior to the Titanic. I bout the first two series and they’re now on series three. It’d be worth your while to buy series one and two from like Amazon and watch them. I’ll be buying the next series when it comes out. It’s a great period piece, nicely done. Perfect in every detail.

Regarding Lord Grantham being oh so politically correct about a certain employee by the name of Thomas?

I like John Bates.I’m glad he’s getting out of prison. I like the way Mr. Carson runs the place.

'Downton Abbey' Offers Sweetness ... and Sour Similarities to Age of Obama
Count me as one of the millions of ardent fans of “Downton Abbey." Light years beyond a drawing room soap opera, this finely lensed and brilliantly written and acted drama fashions such a rich tapestry of human interaction as to stagger and awe this happy viewer.

I watch it like a rabid football fan, aching for my favorites to move the heart forward; and booing the villains’ interceptions, fumble recoveries … and scores.

In "Downton Abbey" love is the prize and avarice the opponent. And when the yearning yields past pretense and love inevitably shines through, as it does even within this stilted, formal and pre-patterned hierarchy ... it’s absolute magic.

And startling so, without the usual cable compliment of car crashes, shootouts, stabbings and titty bars. What "Downton Abbey" does have is an anachronistic quality that is so sorely lacking in almost all productions on television or movie theaters as to render it a precious gem beyond value. That quality … is "sweetness."

Don’t forget Abby Normal.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Would you mind telling me, who’s brain I did put in?
Igor: And, you won’t be angry?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will not be angry.
Igor: Abby-someone.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Abby-someone. Abby who?
Igor: Abby-normal.

Downton Abbey is outstanding but, except for issues of a technical/cinematic nature (thanks to a much higher budget),cannot hold a candle to Upstairs/Downstairs.I must say that Maggie Smith is the shining star of the series.

They have played to the end of Season 3 that got people in such an uproar in England before Christmas.

For those that don’t know I won’t spoil it.

My response was the same as those in England.

OH NO...NOT (insert name here)

Oh, yes. Eggs-actly. Broken eggs. You’re not going to like the ending of this season. They do so love to shake us up. One in; one out. Say no more.

I was expecting a lot more going on at the end. Joy and contentment does not make for interesting drama; there should have been a lot more left up in the air and threatening the future of these characters.
