My company is moving me to Oklahoma City in the next two months. I'm relocating from Katy, TX (in the Houston area).
What we are looking for is a place where we have maximum freedom to do with our property as we like within reasonable driving distance (40 minutes of downtown). We homeschool our four boys and that is not going to change, so highly rated schools are not a factor for us.
We've looked east of town towards Shawnee and North towards Guthrie. We've also talked about abandoning our hopes of having any kind of property and moving close to downtown in an older house, although the violent crime rate seems extremely high, even in nicer neighborhoods.
Any thoughts from FReepers in the OKC area would be highly valued.
South of Norman and you can have it all.
The OKC area is windy, right in the middle of tornado alley, and flat as a pancake.
But...it is populated by some of the nicest folks on the planet.
Methinks you’ll get directed to a great place to live, and you’ll like it.
Edmond is always a good choice especially with kids.
I agree, Edmund is the only choice for me. Lots of professionals, nice properties and not too expensive.
Tornado shelter on the property would be a plus. Can double as a prepper burrow as well. LOL! Good luck on the move. Is your company paying for the move? If not, and you aren’t adverse to some work, might I suggest contacting ABF. They drop the containers and you load them. Call them and they pick them up and will deliver them to your new location or store them until you have a new location secured. We used them moving from FL to NV (2 containers) and it cost us just over $3k door to door. PODS wanted $5k per container and told us we’d need 2. Just a suggestion.
Don’t neglect to check out Mustang and Yukon on the west side of the city. I lived there for several years and liked those communities.
Since they’re on the southwest side a job in the northeast side of the city would be a long commute. The city is massive in area.
Downtown to Mustang is twenty minutes in light traffic, 30-45 in heavy traffic.

Ditto on Edmond. One statistic: Edmond has the highest per capita of college degrees in the state. Very good public schools - I understand that this may not be a priority for you, but it indicates the level of parent involvement, etc. It is about 20 minutes to downtown OKC and had good restaraunts and kids activities, like sports etc.
Edmond OK is a bedroom suburb of OKC and has the best schools in the Metro Area. You might want to look at the dvelopments of Shadow Lake and Shadow Lake Estates that are located just north (1/4 mile) of Waterloo Road and East of Santa Fe Ave (Prices in $250K range and Up). There are beautiful homes on Acre sites in this area and you enjoy the advantages of living in the City of Edmond, but you are actually just inside Logan County and not subject to the City Taxes and Regulations of OK County and the city of Edmond. Your Water is on a well which saves you a lot of money in the Summer. I recommned you check it out (30 Minutes from anywhere in OKC).
I live in Noble and heartily agree.
North Edmond, just into Logan County across Waterloo.
I grew up in Edmond. You can’t go wrong there.
I grew up in the OKC metro. Here’s some thoughts...
Edmond — This is where a lot of wealthy people live. A college town. Good shopping. Lots of opportunities to get a business going.
Shawnee — Home of the *EXCELLENT* Oklahoma Baptist University. (I’m a tiny bit biased.) OBU is one of the highest ranked schools in the region, a real hidden gem. If your boys might someday head off to college, this would be one to look at.
Mustang — I grew up in Mustang. Mustang feels more like country than city, but it’s close enough so you can drive to the downtown area in about 25 minutes. Mustang is worth going to take a look.
Norman — Home of the University of Oklahoma.

I would go for Edmond and then, also, go to Faith Bible Church there, where Dr. Mark Hitchcock is the pastor.
About Mark Hitchcock ...
Mark Hitchcock is a leading Bible prophecy expert, prolific author who has penned over 20 books on the end times, senior pastor, and adjunct faculty member of the Dallas Theological Seminary. He has appeared on hundreds of radio programs and in print as well as The History Channel, MSNBC, Fox, The Glenn Beck Show, and CNN. A leading Christian voice on Mayan 2012 prophecy, he is scheduled to appear on an NBC sci-fi special related to 2012 airing fall, 2009.
A former attorney, Mark initially worked for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. Following a call to full-time ministry, today he serves as senior pastor of Faith Bible Church in Edmond, Oklahoma, just outside of Oklahoma City. He graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1991, where he subsequently earned his doctorate in 2006 and more recently has served as an adjunct faculty member.
Hitchcock has been a contributing editor for the Left Behind Prophecy Club for many years. His new book 2012, the Bible, and the End of the World (Harvest House Publishers) will be released September 15, 2009. He has also recently released Cashless (July 1, 2009, also published by Harvest House), showing how todays headlines foreshadow a new and vastly different economic futurea one-world economy that is consistent with Bible prophecy in Revelation 13. Some of his other titles include: The Late Great United States: What Bible Prophecy Reveals about Americas Last Days; Armageddon, Oil, and Terror; Iran the Coming Crisis: Radical Islam, Oil and the Nuclear Threat; The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; What On Earth is Going On?; Is America in Bible Prophecy?; The Coming Islamic Invasion of Israel; Is the Antichrist Alive Today?; Seven Signs of the End Times; and What Jesus Says About Earths Final Days.
Hitchcock maintains an active speaking schedule, appearing frequently at prophecy conferences, seminaries, and churches. He and his wife, Cheryl, live in Edmond, Oklahoma with their two sons Justin and Samuel.

If I were closer to Edmond, I would go there!
Tulsa.
“What we are looking for is a place where we have maximum freedom to do with our property”
If this is a requirement I suggest you get a place outside of any city limits. I live in NE Canadian county outside of Piedmont and an pretty much free to do as I please with my property. As my neighbor put it when I move here, “you can run around her with your hair on fire if you want to.”
If you must move to OKC. I would highly recommend Southwest Baptist Church.

Ditto that. Especially the part about having well water.
