Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 27, 2013 --hysteresis

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

hysteresis [his-tuh-ree-sis]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. the lag in response exhibited by a body in reacting to changes in the forces, especially magnetic forces, affecting it. Compare magnetic hysteresis.
2. the phenomenon exhibited by a system, often a ferromagnetic or imperfectly elastic material, in which the reaction of the system to changes is dependent upon its past reactions to change.

Origin: From the Greek term meaning "a coming short, a deficiency." Hysteresis, a term coined by Sir James Alfred Ewing, a Scottish physicist and engineer (1855-1935), refers to systems, organisms and fields that have memory. In other words, the consequences of an input are experienced with a certain lag time, or delay. One example is seen with iron: iron maintains some magnetization after it has been exposed to and removed from a magnetic field.

Investopedia explains 'Hysteresis'
In economics, hysteresis arises when a single disturbance affects the course of the economy. An example of hysteresis in economics is the delayed effects of unemployment. As unemployment increases, more people adjust to a lower standard of living. As they become accustomed to the lower standard of living, people may not be as determined to achieve the previously desired higher living standard. In addition, as more people become unemployed, it becomes more socially acceptable to be or remain unemployed. After the labor market returns to normal, some unemployed people may be disinterested in returning to the work force.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The effects of hysteresis on unemployment, after four years of the Obanation, have made 8% the new normal.

No pushing at the door please!

As the prices of gasoline creep up
My car goes into paresis
Only my bike can keep up
With effects of this hysteresis.

My Harley will get you home
At 20 miles to the Liter
And since it’s all covered in chrome
Being “green” just couldn’t be sweeter.

You gotta use a Schmitt trigger if you want hysteresis.

I have a meeting with Gilderoy Lockhart at the HS today about my daughter’s schedule for next year, to see the difference between AP and Honors classes. I suspect the work demand is the same, but she can get college credit for the AP.

We don’t need no fancy word like hysterisis to explain the rotten state of the Obama economy. I just get hysterical every time I see one of those Dem shills that Fox & Friends introduces to tell me what the “American people” really want. This AM they had a former aide of Harry Reid telling us that “All of the American people want us to raise taxes”. Seriously.

Hysteresis is like die-a-resis only the sufferer goes hysterical crazy first.

Five years into 0bama and the hysteresis has not been reached, as most low info voters still adore him. They are like frogs in warm water, with the heat slowly coming to a boil, they fail to look into the future. The jactitation of thewon and his followers continues. They remain totally unaware of the coming financial doom. The calumny of the situation does not exceed the imagination of the conservatives. 0’s monomania to turn us into a communist hell hole is progressing. He wangles for that goal daily.

It is 62 and windy-I tried for awhile to get the fallen trellis up off the ground, but it is way too heavy for one person, so I threw a tantrum and came back inside...

Obama’s slowness to react on
Budget issues is really lame-
He usually leaps without looking
So he must be off his game

And his minions’ tardy response
Could well be worth a thesis-
This is one of the few times
They are affected by hysteresis

It must be the stress and strain
Of remembering all they said
In their eagerness to create
Seqestration fear and dread...

I was hiking along this morning, singing this-

“The sound of your footsteps
Telling me that you’re near
Your soft gentle motion, baby
Brings out the need in me that no one can hear, except

In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
I love you

But a little gold ring you wear on your hand makes me understand
There’s another before me, you’ll never be mine
I’m wasting my time”

I haven’t heard that in a long time-either I’m in a time warp, or it was playing on the radio while I was sleeping...

I’m cranking up “Eve of Destruction” to really fit the current state of the world...

Smoking anything causes so much damage to your body, but Meth is just unreal - It appears that while crack seems to be the drug of choice in the ghetto, meth is the drug of choice in the white trash community. Does it seem that way to you as well?
