Word For The Day, Thursday, February 28, 2013 – paraph

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

paraph \PAR-uhf\, noun
a flourish made after a signature, as in a document, originally as a precaution against forgery.

Example sentences:
The manuscript's most tantalizing feature is a scribal paraph with the initials IB at the end of Certain sonnets...
-- H. R. Woudhuysen, Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscriptsa

His worried expression, however, was not just a mask for the moment. Of late, it had become his most distinctive feature, his peculiar paraph.
-- Ken Anderson, The Statue Of Pan

The paraph is only a schematic and marginal countersignature, a fragment of signature; indeed, who can claim to decipher a whole signature?
-- Jacques Derrida, Mémoires

Etymology:
Though early incarnations of paraph appear in Italian, Middle French, and Middle English, its earliest origins are Greek with para-meaning "beside" and the final -ph resulting from graphos, referring to text.root alloquī address."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I saw it too. They shouldn’t have gotten rid of Hunter and Vokey at the same time. Basically, everything else is the same, right?

Please say a prayer for xshub, who called me just now from Minneapolis where he is on a biz trip, to tell me that he’s in the hospital and having laser surgery for kidney stones. i was immediately concerned when Karim’s name popped up on my phone wondering why he was calling me and it was xshub calling but obv his phone was back at the hotel. I am so thankful he had Karim with him on this trip. Supposedly he will be able to fly home today.

Will do.

And can you add my Mom to your prayer list? She is suffering the very same thing, only because she is 86, the medical establishment keeps “putting her off” and letting her suffer incredible pain and loss of dignity.

Prayers up.

Kidney stones are bad enough but kidney stones out of a town are worse.

never. and i supposedly HAVE them but i guess they are laying dormant or something. i have an annual MRI to monitor another kidney issue and they saw the stones as long ago as 6-7 years, but i have not had [knock wood] any pain from them.

I didn’t know they had any laser treatment for them. I thought it was just “pass them.” So be thankful for that.

She lives in Boston (which is supposed to have the finest hospitals in the world) and she has already been shunted around three hospitals and two nursing homes, a urologist, and a bunch of other “Specialists”. Her personal doctor is trying to get her decent care, but he is running into roadblocks everywhere too. It is a harbinger of things to come.

Thank you for your prayers.

Yes I was aware that they could use lasers to break them up, not sure when that techology came along. i haven’t experienced kidney stone pain, but i have experienced the pain of childbirth, and it’s a similar principle, large object passing through a much much smaller canal.

My folks are beginning to get that same treatment - their primary doctor told them before the election that she would probably retire early because she was only going to get paid less and less for her medicare patients while also curtailing the service she can provide. She said it was a horrible situation.

My husband had them. He had something like lythotripsy (sp?). They put him in a tub of water and hit them with sound waves. They use laser now. Cool. Hope its not too painful will pray.

Does she have health issues to prevent surgery? Will pray. Pain like that is awful.

i don’t think the post-op pain can even approach the agonizing pain he had for three hours before calling the ambulance last night. He should be finishing up the procedure before too long.

No health issues that would prevent this kind of surgery. Nope. It’s just that they keep putting her off as having dementia and just THINKING that she is in pain. It has taken them three weeks to find the kidney stone, and all that time they just kept saying she was confused and it was all in her head. I kid you not.
