FORT HUACHUCA A prescribed burn at two training areas in Garden Canyon are planned on the post today, according to a fort spokeswoman.
The burn of 1,104 acres in the first training area is planned for the morning and 781 acres of the second training area are planned for the afternoon if weather conditions and time permits, Tanja Linton said Wednesday.
If time and weather conditions are not favorable for the burning of the second area Thursday afternoon, the burn will be rescheduled for Friday morning, she said.
Area residents can expect to see smoke over Fort Huachuca today and those with respiratory ailments may want to close their windows and stay indoors, Linton said.
Fire is a part of the ecosystem in the desert southwest and the fort works with the U.S. Forest Service to conduct prescribed burns on the installation to reduce the possibility of a wildfire, she added.
I remember the ranges at Ft Cambell where the brush
was so grown up you couldnt see the pop-up targets.
Lot of work to maintain these bases.
Hope the fire doesn`t get away from them
Huachuca was one of the best TDY’s ever.
I really enjoyed hiking and exploring the based and adjacent Coronado National Forest.
Not to mention, the possible benefit of burning the thousands of pounds of garbage, clothes, backpacks, etc, dumped by the illegals running across the border onto the base.
A fellow retired NCO told me recently that the garbage problem was really bad in the shallow valleys leading up to the populated areas of the base.
I remember being stationed there in ‘89. The mountains were hit by a wildfire.
I sat on my apartment balcony in Sorry Vista, watching the fire creep up the mountainside, and admiring the snow - until I realized it was ash...
These should show as a panorama - taken from the intersection of Buffalo Soldier Trail and Avenida Cochise while he was filling up the car with gas.
Wrong - same shot, just that one is at a slightly higher magnification.
