It’s not the garbage that puts me off, it’s the commercials. Go back and have a look at some old sitcoms like “All in the Family”. They ran 26 minutes for a half hour show. That’s 8 30 second spots in a half hour. Those days are gone forever. Now the show and commercials nearly split the time evenly.

Talk about Modern Family, Amazon Kindle New Commercial Makes Gay Marriage the New Normal (Video):

SEE THIS AD :

The commercial starts off as a pretty standard Kindle ad:

Guy sitting on the beach is reading a glare-prone iPad

Girl sitting next to guy is reading a Kindle

Guy asks girl about the Kindle

Girl tells guy all the great features of the Kindle

When they're done talking about the Kindle, the guy makes his move on the girl and says they should go out and celebrate.

"My husband's bringing me a drink right now," says the girl.

Guy's response: "So is mine!"

And both the guy and girl turn around to wave to their respective husbands.

I note that on some older reruns that were made in an era where the commercials weren't equal to 30% of the run time, they are now running the credits over the final scenes to allow for more commercials without having to edit the show down.

I note also that Rush works about 35 minutes an hour, and the rest is commercials (I've included the times he starts off with "news announcements" about ID theft as commercials, since that's what they are). I need me one a them gigs - get twenty mil or so a year for working 3 hours times 35 minutes, plus a couple of hours a day of prep time that his staffers probably do most of.

I keep thinking that if the economy was really that horrible that advertising budgets would drop off, but apparently I'm wrong.

One of these days I'm going to break out a stopwatch for "Fox & Friends." They'll announce a guest coming up before a commercial break, they'll come back and ask the guest 3 questions, and then go back to commercial breaks. I understand that the business of any TV or radio show is to sell advertising time, but still... That show MUST have 40 minutes of commercials every hour!
