'Gallon Smashing' Comes to the North Shore — The Stupidest Teen Prank Ever?
Danvers (MA) Patch ^ | 3/6/13 | Chris Helms

Four girls went "gallon smashing" at the Shaw's in Salem in Monday. How do you rate this in the annals of stupid teen pranks? (with video--which was not filmed at that market)

In an evolutionary sense, we owe a lot to the adolescents of the species. The unnecessary risks they take helped our ancestors learn important lessons — like which plants were poisonous.

But Monday in Salem there was an example of juvenile behavior for which I'm hard pressed to see the advantage.

"Gallon smashing" is, well, just take a look at the YouTube video attached to this post.

People go into supermarkets and film themselves pretending to fall while smashing one or two gallons of milk.

On Monday, Salem police responded to a "gallon smashing incident" at Shaw's. You can get the details from Salem Patch.

This left me wondering where, on the scale of teen stupidity, this new trend rates. I suppose it's safer than swerving your car on purpose to make oncoming drivers get out of the way or obscuring a stop sign on purpose and causing a fatal wreck.

But it's more dangerous than my favorite prank as a teen: Fireworking teachers' houses.

How do you rate "gallon smashing" among teen pranks?

American teenagers have been doing stupid crap for decades. I know I did my share of stupid pranks as a kid. I turned out to be a productive citizen despite my random acts of stupid. If I had been lock up in prison as many here suggest, my life would have probably taken another direction.

Lighten up. These are just kids acting like kids always have. Punish them appropriately and move on.

OK now flame me!

There’s a strange ad on TV for frozen yogurt where a guy sings, “I wanna meet the cow that made this”. These punks need to do so for an entire summer - with a shovel in hand

Sometimes they’ll do things like “car surfing” and their head meets a low bridge abutment; visiting hours 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, burial the next day.

Force them to lick up every last bit of the spilled milk from the aisle floor.

All kids should be locked up when they are 13 and not released until they are 29. Maybe 35. I know I should have been.

I know you are just kidding around, but this is an example of left-wing thinking: "I was a bad kid, therefore, every kid is a bad kid, therefore every kid should be treated badly." It's a group identity thing. Some of us, even in our wilder phase, still had a strong sense of right and wrong.

I still own my first firearm...a .22 cal Remington Nylon 66 rifle purchased from Bradlees in...1982?

Cost me $129 and that was with a Weaver v22 variable scope. Still a sweet little piece.

Obviously they’re witches.

Time to reinstate the Salem witch trials.

That’ll learn ‘em...

Having spent much of my life living and working in Third World countries where many go hungry for lack of food, I find pranks like this by our spoiled and very privileged yoots difficult to watch. We, who have so much, can afford to throw it on the ground and roll around in it. Cringeworthy. Very cringeworthy.

Ooow, I just decided that if I witness such an act, I will move up beside the punk and pretend to slip and fall — right on top of the little prick. Being 6ft/250, it will leave a mark.

Some smart ass 18 yr. old told me taking “shots” takes too long to get drunk, so his friends use eye droppers and places eye drops of vodka in the ducts of their eyes. I said, “doesn’t that hurt?” He said, “yes, but you get smashed”.

Stupid kids.

In Lawrence MA for years they’ve done insurance fraud by intentionally crashing cars (often with illegal aliens). One on occasion an elderly woman in one car (among the perpetrators) was killed during this.

Exactly.

Gallon smashing shouldn't be dismissed as a mere prank.

So are you saying that the appropriate response to a teenager stealing and then destroying $4 of food is either death or sterilization?

Yep
