Ya know, I just realized the AKC allowed
a single European breed to be broken up into 3 (leaving out one coat type) separate breeds. I owned one of those dogs, as a matter of fact.
In Europe, the Belgian Shepherd has 4 varieties: Groenendal, Tervuren, Malinois and Laekenois. But AKC split that breed arbitrarily, IMHO. UKC considers all varieties Belgian Shepherds, however. So, there is precedent for separating a breed into multiple breeds according to color. Go figure.

Schnauzers are broken up into 3 breeds: miniature, standard and giant.
