On radio? The Shadow and The Green Hornet.”
That was real radio. We used to hide under the kitchen table and listen because particularly The Shadow seemed so scary.
We watched Amos and Andy on TV. Didn’t matter what color the people were, everything was black and white anyway but they were so funny. The only other TV show we were permitted to watch was Lawrence Welk - my mom’s favorite show - except she would turn it off when that couple came out to dance and then turn it back on after a few minutes. Never did like Lawrence Welk.
Amos’n’Andy (the TV version) wasn’t really as racist as the race hustlers would like you to think. There was really only one character that fit the traditional negative black stereotype (Lightning).
You had the dumb womanizer (Andy), the crooked one (The Kingfish), the slimy lawyer (Calhoun), the battleaxe wife and mother-in-law (Sapphire and Mama) and an honest, hard-working Christian family man (Amos).
But apart from Lightning, all those other characters would have worked just as well if they were white. Consider shows like Green Acres and Dukes of Hazzard. Boss Hogg? A white Kingfish.
Human failings have nothing to do with race.
