Participants in the annual, three-day Sweetwater Rattlesnake RoundUp in Texas caught more than a ton of snakes, organizers said.

More than 30,000 people attended the event, they said, with visitors including people from as far away as China, Israel, Germany, England and Australia..

The roundup paid $13-per-pound for captured rattlers, featured about 2,160 pounds of rattlesnakes being weighed, the most since the 2,168-pound total in 2010, the Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News reported Monday.

"The importance of this is to control the snake population and to inform the public," Texas Game Warden George Pasley said. "You see all these snakes here and you think there can't be many left in the wild, but there's plenty. We see rattlesnakes all the time. I have seen no shortage of rattlesnakes."

Kathleen and Darrell McIntyre of Childress won a $400 prize for capturing the longest snake. It measured 78 inches.

A bazillion years ago at boy scout camp I saw a frozen eastern diamondback that measured 6’5”. It’s head was as big as my teenage fist.

I don't have a specific recollection about the head of mine. I was curious as to what was causing that lump in his body. When I skinned it, I discovered the snake last fed on an opossum. A few years later, I told the story to someone who asked if I ate the snake. Heck no. I've never been hungry enough to consider eating a snake.

The camp ranger kept it in the freezer to pull out on skinning night each week to show off.

I skinned mine and kept it on a board hanging on my bedroom wall. When I went off to college, the skin disappeared from my bedroom. In retrospect, I wish I had the snake mounted but as a teenager, the $300 or so it would have cost to mount the snake would buy a lot of burgers and shakes.

I use the plastic shot caps.

Also works with three lead balls in .44 and .45.

Not too much different than a .410.

Good short distance defense load or even a good small game/pest/attacking dog load.

15’, right through 3/4” plywood, about a 6”-8” group depending on barrel length.

I wouldn’t want to be in front of it.

String lead fishing weights together on some steel leader, and it get’s gown right nasty.

That will work just fine, just don’t walk up on a bunch of sow water moccasins laying eggs or you will learn to do the “air walk”.

I’m blind in one eye. Always imagined that sucker on the same side just looking at me.
I hate snakes!
