“What difference, at this point, does it make?”

I watch a lot of H.S. baseball at the Concord (MA) playground, where the Concond-Carlisle. Around here, the umpires seem to be first rate.

These guys are ‘OK’ here for the most part (N VA)but have noticed a lot of ‘rabbit ears’ as to criticism - NOT even when yelled AT them, but if some overhear a couple of people talking - I have seen them ‘join the conversation’ - arguing with the fans - BUT if fans continue to get on ump, they are ejected, 2nd time and DON’T come back — NOT a good move, best remain neutral.
Had my first and ONLY female ump when my GS was a Freshman (4yrs ago) and she was terrible. Not only stunk up the place but was so bad the Coaches ‘ganged up on her’ and were defending each other - her ‘partner’ really did nothing extraordinary to ‘protect’ her but I would imagine they didn’t want her either.

After the game I managed to put a lid on it and made a statement she may have had a ‘bad day’ but I had seen worse...She kind of grimaced and then I ‘lowered the boom’ and said “I am sorry LADY, I lied. You are the worst umpire I have EVER seen and I go back to before Jackie Robinson breaking in to the League”.

Never did see or hear of her since, but that doesn’t mean anything...

Is that real?

If so then that is a spectacular catch!

Gatorade commercial that never aired but went viral on the internet. There’s a link to the whole video in post #63.

Well if this is the attitude of someone that is ‘training’ or evaluating umps, one can see the attitude they may possess.

I remember the best umpire I ever knew was a very light hearted "interactive" type of umpire that would take great pains to explain things to the coaches in a non-threatening way. He was highly respected in our coaching circles and he was also the umpire trainer so we always had pretty good umpires if they were trained by him. He also carried an air of authority and baseball knowledge that most people would not question his calls.

I remember talking to him while he was watching a game and commented to him on what I thought was a bad/missed call. He just kind of laughed and said, "Yah, he might have missed that one ha ha ha. But we don't have the same angle he does so...who knows". That was just the way John was and everyone loved it when he worked the games. He would always be very supportive of the players and coaches for their efforts. It ended up being a mutual admiration society actually...lol
