What most folks would consider prepping is how my grandparents lived. And how I live today.
I go into winter with a very full larder (most of it I can myself). Wound up adding some feral pork that I cured and smoked (thanks, brother).
And now that we're about a week away from the vernal equinox, I've got a cold frame busting full of tomato, pepper, and tobacco plants ready to go in the ground after Easter.
I can rinse and repeat whether the world around me collapses or keeps going crazy.
Is it prepping? Or is it just living a conservative and prudent life?

I grew up during the Cold War, my daf was in the AF and they were told to have 3 months of food on hand. I laugh now because the 8 of us coldn’t have lived 3 weeks on what we had and it seemed like a lot.
OTOH, my MIL had home canned goods from years back and could have lasted for months.

That is pretty much how I live as well, I guess I have always been a prepper. Didn’t think of it because I have always lived a good distance from any town so have to have enough on hand to last a while.

I’m with you, we live like our grandparents did too, only on steroids now.

I’ve been discussing such living with people on another chat board. Most think I’m an insensitive deranged moron who wants poor people to “f-— off and die” ... because I suggest all should be able to grow a simple garden and build a humble cabin (among other skills), and do so if circumstances dictate.

Sounds like the good life to me.
Every time I say something like that, somebody snarls at me about how it wasn't a good life, it was miserable and full of hard work. As if the amount of work involved dictates whether it was good or bad, HA!
I'm just not built for the urban lifestyle. I've scratched a shelter out of the dirt before, and lived just fine. I know more now. This summer I'll be proving it.

Excellent philosophy. I figure I am a prepper as long as I live in the city. When I get to move to my dream farm, I will be a homesteader.
What's in a name? It's all the same frame of mind and philosophy, no matter the nomenclature. I've found that once the bug to live more simply and prepared, it permeates everything I do. In a very nice and serene and confident way.

Me too. I've been a prepper all my life and didn't know it until now. It's just how I grew up and carried through my adulthood.

You know what I think - it’s a life style. It’s the way my grandparents lived. I even learned to milk a cow by hand when I was a kid, so if I have to, I’ll just get a goat. The goat can provide milk, and replace the lawnmower maybe.LOL
