Rare brain condition leaves woman seeing everything upside

Bojana Danilovic has what you might call a unique worldview. Due to a rare condition, she sees everything upside down, all the time.

The 28-year-old Serbian council employee uses an upside down monitor at work and relaxes at home in front of an upside down television stacked on top of the normal one that the rest of her family watches.

"It may look incredible to other people but to me it's completely normal," Danilovic told local newspaper Blic.

"I was born that way. It's just the way I see the world."

Experts from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been consulted after local doctors were flummoxed by the extremely unusual condition.

They say she is suffering from a neurological syndrome called "spatial orientation phenomenon," Blic reports.

Not sure I believe this...

She should be able to wear glasses that will invert the imgo for her. There were tests years ago where people wore inverting glasses and adapted to them is less than a week.

There is such a thing as Perceptual Adaptation, and I suppose it's possible for the adaptation to fail.

She should go to the southern hemisphere. They call it “down under” for a reason, right? Everything is upside down there.

Everyone sees everything upside down always. Images of the world are projected on our retinas upside down as a result of the optics of our eyes; we adapt to this and never notice it.

Many experiments have been done with “inverting glasses;” the earliest were done more than one hundred years ago.

When people wear the inverting glasses for long periods of time, they adapt. They no longer notice the inversion. When the glasses are removed, they see the world upside down once again, until they once again adapt.

What this person has is something else. Since only she can experience it - and since it can’t be measured or verified outside her own mental landscape - I’m a bit skeptical.

After all, there are lots of people who claim to have been born into a body of the wrong sex. No one can verify that, no one can prove it or disprove it... we have only their word for it.

Maybe she needs a Brit/Aus/Japanese spec vehicle to drive in Europe?

I saw a show recently about a women that was born severely cross eyed and did not have corrective surgery until well into her forties. She spent her entire life seeing only through one eye and because of this her brain had never been trained to have depth perception.

Well she started a set of eye exercises to retrain her brain and after about six months she had succeeded to discern depth.

So, in about a week she would be seeing upside down again. ;-)

I dunno, are you familiar with the medical term ‘chameleon’? One famous case was a woman who was going to doante a kidney to her son, only to discover that apparently she was not a DNA match. Turns out she had ‘absorbed’ a sibling very early in gestation and had the DNA of herself and her sibling throughout her body ... a sister lung, her own liver, etc.

When I was in high school, we saw a film in a physics class where a guy put on these special glasses that inverted everything, after about two days even though he was still wearing the glasses the images were re-inverted to what he had normally saw.
As interesting as this is (the woman), how did she know she was seeing things differently, what she saw would appear to be normal, because she didn’t know any different.
