'Last American Man' facing government shutdown of his camp for not adhering to building codes

Actual (very long) headline: The rugged outdoorsman who has been dubbed the 'Last American Man' is facing a government shutdown of his camp in the Appalachian Mountains for not adhering to building codes

A man who has dedicated nearly 30 years to building and living off of his 500-acre farm is facing having his entire way of life shut down by the state government. Eustace Conway, 51, who has been called ‘The Last Great American Man’ for his rustic way of living, could lose his camp in the Appalachian Mountains, his home for the past three decades.

The Watauga County Planning Department in North Carolina has found several health and sanitary violations in his encampment and has threatened to condemn the buildings.

Conway, who was given the title of the ‘last great American man’ by ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ author Elizabeth Gilbert in her 2002 biography, is fighting the department over their violations.

According to the Wall Street Journal, several officials showed up to his Turtle Island Preserve home and found that his outhouses, kitchens, and even the wood he’s used to build several structures across the properties aren’t up to snuff.

Their findings were summarized in a 78-page report.

Now the planning department is demanding that Conway either tear down his structures or rebuild them in-line with public housing codes.

The naturalist is outraged.

Think of this man and too many like him the next time you hear someone yodeling the last lines of the National Anthem. “The land of the free and the home of the brave” is no longer the USA.

From the time your Daylight Savings Time alarm goes off in the morning until you use your low-flow toilet and shower at night, the government controls your living in this country. And you pay more to these rulers than serfs ever paid to their lords....but the sheeple are ordered not to complain lest it be a “threat” to someone in government.

Anytime you expose yourself, as a lot of these people have done in the name of “reality” tv, the powers that be WILL take notice and pay you a visit. Just like “Gold Rush”, “Bearing Sea Gold”, etc. No doubt the folks in Tannana, AK will be getting a visit before too long. (Yukon Men). All of a sudden the DNR or OSHA or epa or some other intrusive govt agency will show up to determine if you are “in compliance” with some obscure rule or regulation. Simple rule, don’t draw attention to yourself, keep your mouth shut, dig all night.

The Watauga County Planning Department in North Carolina has found...

Well there's your problem!

What were these people doing on his property in the first place?

Working with building and planning departments a a regular basis and this does not surprise me. What I have garnered through the years is that it all depends on who you are as to how much you can get away with.

We have several large developers in our area, and they run roughshod over building and planning. If I were a prospective buyer of these properties and they knew what they should know, our real estate market would be dead....

Turtle Island?????
Sounds like a page from the “WILDLANDS PROJECT”!
I’m suspicious of old Eustace and his motives.
Just saying hey, look this one over really good.
North Carolina is pretty far down the slope when it comes to personal property rights.
Left and haven’t missed the corrupt place one bit.

right turn,tight lines

He chose to open it to the public and is selling opportunities to do his farm work. If had kept it private they wouldn’t have had access.

Loose Lips, sink ships.

The less other people know about your business, the better.

I have learned that the hard way.

He's been there for 30 years and there's no be grandfathered in?

I can't speak of North Carolina, but I can speak of sections of Hitt Street in Columbia, MO, and the Chinese owned rooming house I lived in. It wasn't up to code, but it was CHEAP. Or, perhaps try, say, 47th street WEST of Cottage Grove in Chicago, just a coupla miles from Bammy's Kenwood Crib. Pick a few tenements at random. The Mountain Man will come out looking better, I guarantee you.

The difference to the hundreds of Obamavilles all across the US?

This guy actually owns the property he lives on. Hence he must be punished.

Sadly, unless you are totally off the grid, they already know way more than they need to. Cash and barter. Forget algores internet. No banks. No vehicles unless you only use them on your property thus requiring no plates. You understand the whole drill.

This part of the article, right there in the excerpt, sure sounds like he does:

A man who has dedicated nearly 30 years to building and living off of his 500-acre farm...

Do you have information that he doesn't own his farm?

His name might appear on the deed, but it sure seems like the state owns it doesn’t it?

Having title to something used to mean you owned it, we are now a socialist nation, we do not even own our own bodies.

People voted in socialism to get free stuff, but there are more consequences to socialism than most of the voters realize.
