I think the Austin Powers parody, pretty much guaranteed that...."Why don't you just shoot him?"

Interesting observation concerning the impact of the Austin Powers parodies.

The Bond movies had become so formulaic and cliche, that they were becoming parodies of themselves with the Roger Moore movies.

The Timothy Dalton movies showed some promise, but couldn't let go of the be-gadgeted, Don Juan, it didn't help that Dalton just couldn't pull it off.

The Pierce Brosnan movies started to introduce some serious grit, but it was the exception, not the rule.

Daniel Craig's Bond started out rough and unrefined/defined. Relying on action over gadgets and having no uncanny luck or magical allure over women, just raw masculinity.
