Area police agencies note misfires getting ammo

The common citizen is not the only one having trouble getting ammunition.

Law enforcement agencies have seen their ammunition purchases put on back order because of a nationwide run on ammunition.

That includes Wyoming County, where the Sheriff’s Department’s order made in 2012 has yet to arrive and there is no estimate for delivery. Orleans County has the same problem.

“It’s been this way before, because of the wars but I think this is worse,” said Investigator Corey Black, who supervises firearms training for the department. “We plan for things like this so we run a little surplus each year.”

He said the department ordered 15,000 to 20,000 rounds for 2013, including .45-caliber, .223-caliber and 12-gauge shotgun shells.

All are on back order, Black said. The jail, he said, orders another 10,000 rounds each year.

Black said as long as the ammunition eventually arrives, the shortage should not affect training requirements.

Genesee County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble said the department “just got our shipment.”

Ammunition shortages are not new. At various times during the war in Iraq ammunition supplies ran low for certain calibers. The same happened after President Obama was elected, with gun owners fearing new laws that would limit or take away altogether the right to bear arms.

The same is happening now, with New York’s SAFE Act greatly restricting gun ownership and ammunition purchases and federal laws in the works that do the same.

“It’s a combination of things,” said Mike Barrett, owner of Barrett’s Batavia Marine on West Main Street. “The government is stockpiling ammunition. People’s knee-jerk reactions and being afraid of the gun laws.”

Barrett said Winchester representatives said it could be at least another year before supplies return to normal.

“A lot of it is driven by the gun laws,” he said. “We’ve seen this before but this is the worst I’ve seen since I started here in 1972. We have to beg for stuff.”

Your graphic should be updated as the DHS order for .45 caliber rounds was for hollow points.

That is why we all should have a Basic Load of ammo on hand. Minimum - 1000 rounds per caliber of weapon you own. I have more than that but that information is classified on a public forum. I only engage in recoil therapy (weekly) with ammo I have in addition to my basic load.

It is late to start thinking about your basic load right now but get it going when the supply eases up. "Keep Your Powder Dry" Brothers.

I had a Dr.’s appointment yesterday. After seeing him I stopped by Wal-Mart. Their gun racks are now full except for two empty spaces.

Their ammo shelves were around 2/3 full. I noticed a sign that only one 800 round pack of .223 could be bought at a time.

I did not see any on the shelves and no .22LR at all. Calibers such as 30-06 were back to about what they usually are.

I stopped by a Wal-Mart in southeastern Pennsylvania yesterday and found none of what you saw. Considered myself lucky to pick up a few boxes of shotgun slugs.

“The government is stockpiling ammunition. People’s knee-jerk reactions and being afraid of the gun laws.”

Or maybe the causes are government's knee-jerk reaction and the people stockpiling ammunition, hmmm?... (just irritates me when someone implies my behavior is any less rational than the government's.)

This one is in a small town (around 2500) and is a small Wal-Mart.

Maybe once a month, I stop by a supercenter in DeFuniak Springs. It seems to mirror pretty closely the small one. At one time they were just about out of everything. This was after Christmas which probably explained part of it.

Oregon shelves have been empty for over a month. Gun show vendors are gouging. Reloading supplies are non-existent.

Now wait a minute, that pic had to be taken before you lost all your armaments in a boating accident. Well, at least it was good while it lasted.
