Why don’t the Liberals just use all the water from the melting polar ice caps? That would help keep coastal cities from being flooded.

Coastal cities want water? They have the means to provide themselves with just about all the potable water they now need or shall ever want in the future, WITHOUT tapping inland sources like the Sierra mountain reservoirs or the Colorado and Columbia river basins.

The vast amount of water that exists on this planet is of relatively high salinity, plus a number of other dissolved solids. There are two ways to tackle the problem.

One is to genetically modify the terrestrial plant life and animal life, including human beings, to survive and thrive on saline water, even at very high levels. The oceans TEEM with life that has made the necessary adaptations to saline conditions.

The other way is to PRODUCE potable water from the ocean itself. The schemes used so far, like some kind of osmosis filters, or using physical means to separate high concentrations of dissolved minerals from relatively low concentrations, may be perfected some day, but we just are not there yet.

What the world needs is a highly concentrated heat source, so the ocean water may be distilled, and believe it or not, we have the means to construct just such a heat source. Atomic piles, fueled by thorium, generate vast total amounts of heat in a much more controlled way, than do atomic piles fueled by uranium, but the design of thorium-powered atomic piles has not been pursued with any kind of vigor.

Simply distill brackish ocean water with this heat generated by the atomic piles, in huge columns, and use the collected distillate to provide the potable water needed. A more intelligent use of “gray water”, which may not be potable for consumption, would be for secondary uses like lawn irrigation and even agriculture.

On large enough scale, this system could actually effect so-called “climate change”, turning most coastal cities into lush rain forests, and with sustainable agriculture within the city limits, in high-rise units with various sources of artifical or natural light.

Or maybe I just play too much SimCity.
