I am still using my Satellite that I bought in Slovakia
around 2004.
The CD has gone out, but my main problem is that it takes forever to boot and the HD runs much more then it should.
None of the normal maintenance functions, such as defrag, are of any help. If anyone has an idea, I am open to suggestions.
I might add, the Satellite will crash in a warm environment without an external fan.
Mine is elevated, with a five inch muffin fan blowing under and over.
Last year I bought a newer Satellite from a distressed expat, but my wife and 2 yr old baby monopolize it.
I also have a Dell laptop that another expat hocked to me.
He is back in the US and it is questionable if he will be able to return here. (Philippines)
Mine boots faster than it did under XP, but the HD on mine also runs much more then i would like, usually only when coming out of sleep mode, and it seems to have to do with memory allocation as i use up almost all my available 3,38gb or ram, plus 4gb Flash drive ReadyBoost.
I would recommended you right click on the C drive and hit Properties, and under General deselect "Allow files on this drive to be indexed."
More info is needed to help. You could try a simple diagnostic app like What's My Computer Doing? (http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=148942&t=4&i=1) and see what is running when you see HD activity. .
Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) will show more (choose I/O writes) but it is not as easy.
A must to have is WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html (choose Free version). It will alert you to clandestine changes to the system and also has options to see and change what starts with your PC. (Let click twice on icon in system tray)
baby maker LOL way to go. I have a friend who is going there in May or June
