"The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus."

Here in Nebraska there was a meteor that made quite a splash last night per the news today. Only heard about the east coast meteor; if a meteor flies over fly over country, it just ain't considered news.
They never mentioned yours even here in SD; what lake did it splash into?

From the “Porch” on your House I assume.
Does Tina Fey know about this?
On a related note, I can see Uranus on my TV every time Obama is making a Speech.

Of course we’re engaged! That’s why we’re 600,000,000 miles off course, and getting farther off course by the minute!

Oh Wally! Oh Wally! Oh Wally! Oh Wally!
You can’t do that in here, this is a broom closet!
But we’re engaged!
Well, disengage and report back to duty...

May be wrong (I’m going from memory here), but I think the supernova that generated the Crab Nebula was observed and recorded by Chinese astronomers.

Our back pasture is on a nearby airport landing glide path. Sometimes a landing plane coming straight at you can appear stationary for a bit of time. Have even seen them turn landing light on and off during approach, which will get your attention.
Opinion on original question, I suspect it was a satellite reflection. Depending on its position in relation to western horizon sunlight obstructing landmarks. It would be far out to see a star go Nova, but as another poster noted that takes place over several days, not seconds.

OH! Wally; yes, WALLY. I thought you meant the warp drive was still engaged, which is really obvious since we’re now 140,000,000,000 miles off course....

I did not see what you saw. But, I have seen the same sort of thing while using a telescope. My friend and I were both looking at the same target star and a star in the field of view became very bright and went dim and disappeared in an instant.
We both said “did you see that?” at the same time.
Pretty cool.
To: CapnJack
Capn,
If you were in NH, it was probably Romney that you saw for a brief second.

I did see a UFO once years ago that I still can't explain, don't tell anybody :) We are temporarily using this account to remind YOU, again, not to tell anybody!
We now return control of this account to TigersEye. ;^)

They were a wonder, alright; and even more entertaining than Congress.
side note: I had a nightmare thought the other day, after seeing a piece of a schlock trailer: a Terminator built out of Replicators.
