FLAMES TRADE IGINLA TO PENGUINS FOR FIRST-ROUNDER, PROSPECTS
Jarome Iginla's tenure with the Calgary Flames has come to an end.
The team announced that it has dealt Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for college prospects Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski as well as Pittsburgh's 2013 first-round draft pick.
Iginla has scored nine goals and 13 assists in 31 games with the Flames this season.
Holding team records for goals, points and games-played, Iginla's time with the Flames comes to an end in the final year of a five-year deal he signed prior to the 2008-09 season worth an average annual value of $7 million.
Yeah, just saw that. I’d take Iginla over Jagr (right now, not at their peaks) easily.
Penguins still have a solid edge with the moves they’ve made. Of course losing Crosby for a while with the broken jaw doesn’t help the cause. He needs to be back before the playoffs.
Jagr in Dallas benefited from being the big fish in a small pond. But Dallas simply had no choice, since the writing is on the wall that they won’t make the playoffs. But at least they are stocking up on some good prospects. It would have been nice to have Hitch back to coach these guys on how to play defense.
The difference is this isn’t going to end in the regular season. Malkin will play better for sure. He’s always played better when he has better wingers (big duh there). However, last year he turned on puckhog mode and was awful in the playoffs even with two good wingers playing their correct positions.
I wrote the above before the last two games. I still expect Malkin to start playing better. I see energy from him but decision making isn’t there yet and Neal looks like he doesn’t want to be a left wing.
Crosby already had his next oral surgery. They are saying if he doesn’t get a secondary infection he should be healing fast.
For the playoffs - Kunitz-Crosby-Iginla & Morrow-Malkin-Neal
