She cut her hair, became a prostitute, sang a maudlin song extra mawkishly while weeping with snot all over her face, etc. I guess people can’t think of a musical as being raw, gritty, or ugly, but this was that. She won this years Ugliesfor falling somewhere between Theron’s unrecognizable grossness in Monster and Nichole Kidman’s slightly less pretty fake nose as Virginia Woolf.
