dictionaries ad nauseam | 4 April 2013 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 04/04/2013 5:04:10 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

palimpsest (PAL-imp-sest) noun
1. A writing surface such as a parchment that has been reused after partially or completely erasing the original text.
2. Something reused but still showing traces of its earlier form.

Example sentences:
"All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and re-inscribed exactly as often as was necessary."
--George Orwell; Nineteen Eighty-Four; 1949.

"Her memories, too, are a palimpsest of the real and the staged; their courting scenes in a play."
--Molly and the Playwright; The Economist (London, UK); Jun 24, 2010.

Etymology:
From Greek palimpsestos, from palin (again) + psestos + (scraped). Earliest documented use: 1661

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

If Syracuse wins and Louisville loses Saturday I think I win my bracket.

It is 43 and the woods are wet and cold from two days’ rain-winter is back for a few more days...

Obama’s delusional vision
That he keeps trying to sell
Is nothing but a palimpsest
That has never gone very well

His minions will not tell him,
Their sense of meaness shows-
He’s wrapped in a faux creation
Like the emperor with no clothes

That fool Johnson invented it-
He said only “the rich” would pay-
That’s why his great society
Still won’t work to this day...

Do you get free breakfast with a $700 hotel room?

You’d love the motivational poster hung outside the engineering offices here:

We are the one!
Yes we can!

Yes. A Korean engineering firm, though. Very odd to see this blatant ripoff of Obamaganda.

A+ for you. The guy filling in for Glenn Beck this morning was all over the EBT cards and wondering why we stipulate what people can use food stamps for when they can go to any ATM and get cash for whatever they want. The slippery slope is a 12 lane Autobahn.

Thank you! No kidding-there will always be a way to misuse a free pass, whether it is an EBT card, food stamps, whatever, because once it is in someone’s hands, it is off the radar. I had clients on workers comp who were supplementing that income by selling their food stamps to others-if we found out, we put a stop to that, but I’m sure that was just a drop in an ocean.

I remember MrT5 and his co-workers confiscating cards and vouchers from bogus “veterans” who said they were homeless because of Katrina, and who had been buying everything from designer suits to drinks at strip clubs with the things. Those scammers weren’t even from Louisiana, much less NO.

It simply is not possible to have real accountability for blank checks like that-we need to return charity to churches and private organizations, where it can help those who really need the assistance-not scammers.

When he’s slumming in Chicago, B always looks for the palimpsest member in the bathhouse for a liaison…

And now they’re talking about hiring people to “help” citizens get on and use obamacare, including free translators and the “navigators” will be paid a minimum of $20/hr. Crazy. It’s like they have no business experience whatsoever. /s

Now you’re just creeping me out. A for you. We play the revamped Columbus tonight, minus one of my favorite players who will be in DC tonight.

As I understand it the EBT cards may be loaded with “food stamp” money, but also general cash benefits.

No different that someone cashing a welfare check and then buying booze with it. Now the govt doesn’t print checks, they just load electronic money in the card’s account.

Sorry about that, you just (un)naturally associate some things with certain people…

Good luck tonight with Columbus, it’ll be interesting to see if that team gels following such a major shakeup. Here tomorrow night, we’ll see how the Sabres fare with the “population of Pominville” having moved to the State of Minnesota.

I heard that, too-it is just like the old TEC-the people they hired to “help” people find work were mostly there because they didn’t get hired someplace else-all they did was hand the people who went there a card, and send them to job openings they found in the newspaper or on the internet. As the late Garner Ted Armstrong said-When the blind lead the blind, they both fall into the ditch...

That’s awesome. I hope the win the whole shebang. Been too long.

Was up in Syracuse today. Va Hospital and visited my niece and her baby. We ate at Zeb’s before heading home. Got home before dark, which made me happy. Enjoyable day. I was surprised to barely find any of those 10 inches of snow I heard about. Wonder if I saw xsboy on 81S and didn’t even know it.
