'American Idol' execs considered replacing Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez mid-season, report claim
FOX NEWS ^ | 04/24/2013

Did Mariah Carey almost get voted off “American Idol”? According to report from The Hollywood Reporter, “Idol” execs were considering replacing the singing sensation with veteran judge Jennifer Lopez mid-season in an attempt to boost ratings. But the plan fell apart when Carey’s team threatened to take legal action against the show, “knowledgeable sources” told THR.

A rep for Fox denied the report, told FOX 411: "This is just another ridiculous ‘Idol’ judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale." Carey’s rep also contested the report, as did “Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe.

"I have not been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season," Lythgoe told The Hollywood Reporter.

And while it seems the rumors may not have much merit, that doesn’t mean fans of the show wouldn’t be happy to welcome Lopez back to the judging panel.

Lopez fit well on the panel when she judged alongside Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson. This season’s judges haven’t meshed quite as well. Carey and rapper Nicki Minaj have clashed several times on the series, most recently last week when Minaj called Carey “sir” while the two were bickering.

Original “Idol” judge Randy Jackson still sits on the panel along with country star Keith Urban, who is awkwardly positioned between Minaj and Carey. There has been no word yet on which judges, if any, will return to the show for another season.

Yes I know she isn’t blonde. I was trying to be nice in describing her.

Randy, Mariah and Mr. Urban are okay, but the blonde, freaky, girl, not so much. They should have replace HER.

That’s Ryan Seacrest.

DUDE .. that Randy dude, dude, is the most obnoxious dude that ever dude-ed.

Minaj is the token weirdo, but her comments are more in agreement with MY opinions than the others.

It is obvious (imo) the judges try to get rid of some and/or save some contestants and apparently America thinks better.

That weasily looking guy that is supposed to know what he's doing in suggesting music is an asshole and shouldn't even be ON the show.

Mariah is not only a hot milf, she's a calm assessment of talent.

Kieth is a level-headed opinionator.

‘it’s about the contestants.’

True. The funny thing is I can usually tell who will make it and who won’t during the audtions. I picked Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips as the winners when I heard tham audtion the last two years. This year I picked Kree Harrison. So far just about everyone I’ve picked has at least made the top 4. I’ve got to say, none of the guys impressed me at all this year, and I’m not surprised they were gone once the voting started.

I love the show’s premise. The problem I have is that they now have 5 judges talking about each performance. (the fifth judge wears the baseball cap). Too much talk, too little singing.

Maybe they should have booted the one who (apparently) threaten to knife her instead?

This thread is strictly for fans of the how only. If you don't care, we know how you feel, you don't have to post.

I don't blame you for thwarting the contemptuous posts, which are an attempt to shame viewers.

The show has had a great run and spawned imitators.

Most shows would be doing a "Celebrity" version by now.

On this show the celebrities are the judges, so not surprisingly they are given more face time than the contestants.

I venture that the author of this article has never seen the show. It is Randy, not Keith, who sits between the two women.

I do watch AI, but only because FR always has a live thread going. Don't think I could stomach it without the running freeper commentary.

Mr. RightField thinks that the show was so determined to have a female winner this year that no male with any decent talent got by the auditions.

I agree about the males this year. AT best, talented amateurs. The four remaining women are very talented and should all be pros by this time next year. My own current pick is Amber, actually. I was pulling for Candice, but her voice seems to be breaking, which is very sad to observe. Kree is a sentimental favorite but she does not fully commit to the song. If she were to do so, that would be a game-changer.
