From the source:
Willie was named after William the Conqueror by his master General George S. Patton. Patton was an avid pit bull lover who wrote of Willie, My bull pup took to me like a duck to water. He is 15 months old, pure white except for a little lemin [sic] on his tail, which to a cursory glance would seem to indicate that he had not used toilet paper Willie accompanied the commander everywhere and even had his own set of dog tags. The famously gruff general was so enamored of the dog, he even threw him a birthday party. This picture was taken after Pattons death in an automobile accident in 1945. Willie lived out his years with Pattons widow and daughters. Willie is also memorialized standing next to his master in a bronze statue at the General Patton Memorial Museum outside of Indio, California.
