The pups don’t even notice it enough to stop suckling, especially if it’s done with bands.
There’s not even a really good blood supply in the tail yet which is why you can dock young with no vet attending but older dogs require an actual surgical ‘amputation’, in cases of [very common] damage of their long, whip-like tail.
FWIW, if I was given ultimate control of all Dobes everywhere for 10 years, I could breed naturally erect ears *back into* [yes, you heard right] the breed.
First, I would not allow breeding of any dog without a superb thyroid, which is the ‘why’ of their propensity for yeast infections.
Then I would take dogs with naturally erect ears [’Halla had one up and one half-up] and only breed those together.
Then, just for an extra shove, I’d introduce Manchester Terriers into the breed to get their prick ears and more moderate size/angulation in order to reproduce the original Dobermanns.
Given enough time and *self sacrifice”, breeders could easily breed prick-eared dogs and eliminate cropping entirely.
However, they do not seem to be inclined to do so.
As much as it’s not a big deal for the dog, it *is* a PITA for me.
Posting is time consuming and I’d really rather not have to do it ever again.

I agree. I tire of all this permanent artificial ugliness. I can’t believe how many people have adopted this silliness, it’s not just in the trailers.

Danes probably not.
Everything that went into creating them [Wolfhound/Mastiff] was drop-eared and drop ears tend to be dominant.
Boxers, I ~have~ seen with naturally nearly prick ears but their natural ears were noticeably smaller than the average Boxer’s.
Quite a few of them pop up in litters with ‘button ears’ and if one were to keep breeding back to that trait, you could, theoretically, get erect or nearly-so ears.
Same with Dobermanns.
There is a wild variation in natural Dobe ears.
Some are verging on coonhound ears while others have almost have a JRT ear thing going on.
‘Halla was the latter.
Her ears were already naturally small and the cartilage was outrageously firm.
We almost didn’t bother cropping her because most of the time, the one ear was totally up and the other slanted jauntily across her forehead.
We finally did at 15 weeks [way beyond the usual time] because she started getting ear issues and the constant head shaking put her in peril of ear hematomas.

So we did and her cartilage was so good that we half-arsed posted for her about 10 days and that was it.
Her ears are gorgeous and better than any other Dobe I’ve ever had..and possibly, ever seen.
I’m sure this came from her mom’s side as Odin had ‘coonhound ears’.
He got his first round of ear drops and systemic meds when he was just 9 weeks old.
Low thyroid and pendulous ears are bad combination.
It wasn’t near as bad as the English Cocker I used to have.
Lord...what a mess that was.
His ears were very show-type.
Poor dog was a slave to fashion.
A marking tatt for female dogs in that situation is far less traumatic than the possibility of unnecessary surgery should the dog ever be rehomed without medical records.
I thought ranchers only used ear tags to brand their animals. The old fashioned fire-brand must have been terribly painful for the animals.
My Siamese cat had a tattoo when we bought her from a SPCA. They said it is common to tattoo the females that have been spayed. no big deal!
Tattooing pets is fine with me. But I hate tats or Tramp Stamps on people. If you have one, fine, that is your business. I just don’t like the risk. The last time I donated blood there were questions about risky behavior and one was “Have you gotten a tattoo in the last 12 months” So we know it is a health risk! I prefer not to get tats, if someone else wants them, fine, it is their business. No big deal
