A North Carolina man has created huge controversy among animal lovers after tattooing Duchess - his own pet dog.
Ernesto Rodriguez, who is a tattoo artist and Army veteran, inked the 5-month-old purebred American Pit Bull on the underbelly at his basement parlor in Pinnacle, NC, on Wednesday.
When Rodriguez posted pictures of the emblem on Facebook he received fierce criticism from all over the U.S. But the man claims the tattoo can be used for identification and compares it to branding farm animals

too bad he didn’t shave dogs rear and teach him to walk backwards so everyone could say look twins
My little purebred Yorkie arrived from the breeder with an identification tattoo and a chip. Poor baby.
Lets hope Duchess doesn’t have pups or those tats will sag...
Duchess probably laid on her back and wagged her tail during the inking. Not that it makes any sense, though.
what is the difference between people with all those tats and livestock i don’t even try to go to a walmart with out a hotshot
Damn I bet they really get worked up when a rancher brands his cattle, castrates the males, splits/crops the ears for marking, dehorns, etc.
ID is a good practice for pets that can get lost.
For personal vanity, not so much.
The tramp stamp was just wrong!
It’s too bad he didn’t tattoo a fighting Marine
on his belly.....kind of reverse humor lots
of Marines have fighting Bull dog tattoos.
Ooorah, arf arf!
A vet speaks up: Is it OK to Tattoo Your Dog?
Gen_1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Its his dog.
[I'm hoping this is just a photoshop]
I believe in Karma. If the good is sown, the good is collected. When positive things are made, that returns well.
Here’s what I think happened, Mr. Rod posted this on Facebook, hoping to drum up some clients for his at home tatt business. It backfired and got the authorities involved. Probably just as well.
that is lady gaga without her makeup
That’s the actual tattoo? What does it say? Now it’s either hard to tattoo a dog which I’m sure it is or this guys sucks as a tattoo artist or both.
Not that I’d get a tatt....but would you get one from someone who operates out of their basement?
Nope but neither would I get one from someone operating out of a hospital. The point is it is his dog and if it’s not against the laws of the country/state/local that he lives in then it pretty much is his own business to do as he pleases. JMO. Animals are tattooed quite ofter with ink for identification.
Yes, it’s the work of the dog’s owner.
Is it a *D*? I have no idea.
Read the vet link above. I agree with him
**Because tattooing hurts! I should know. I’ve got two on my back, each about the size of this dog’s six-inch-long design. Yet her owner defends the design’s humane origins by claiming it was created immediately after her ear crop, while she remained fully anesthetized and under a veterinarian’s care.
Personally, I’d argue that since the tattooing was medically unnecessary (as was the ear crop, for that matter), the whole thing was a bad idea. Why do this to a dog to satisfy one big-headed yahoo’s warped cultural norms and bad taste? As a veterinarian, I’d never agree to participate in such narcissistic shenanigans. I’m offended by this and think it deserves far more “exploration” than a few rants on Facebook and a smattering of tacky local TV news spots. **
This is cruelty.
Normal dog ID tattoos take about 15 seconds to do and don’t penetrate the skin near as deep as ‘real tattoos’.
Exactly who ‘anesthetized’ the dog?
Done incorrectly, that can kill.
And BS it’s not suffering.
Anybody who’s ever had a tattoo can tell you they hurt like a bitch for quite a while until they heal.
Your Yorkie’s tat was a non-event for the dog.
They’re fast and the dogs barely even flinch.
I’ve had all my dogs tattooed up until they started having microchips available here.
One of my dogs has both.
Back in ‘99, I took 3 dogs for tats at a local clinic and they did them all in 5 minutes.
All of those procedures are done very quickly and for ID purposes only.
We never ‘went artsy’ on any of them.
Years ago, before microchip implants were available, I used to tattoo ID numbers on pets for the purpose of returning them to their owners in the event they got lost. A guy called me up one day and wanted me to tattoo a swastika on his dog. He got an earful of some the most colorful language I’m capable of. I’ve been around and have quite a vocabulary that I can employ when circumstances warrant it. He was dead silent until I finished and then hung up on him.
” Why do this to a dog to satisfy one big-headed yahoo’s warped cultural norms and bad taste?”
So, if he wants to, he can douse it with gas and set it on fire?
If not, why not?
It says Duchess, spelled wrong.
I am not the least into tattoos, but...that is one great looking tattoo!
It’s *cruel and unusual* to me.
I flinch like a child when it comes to immunizations and blood draws....so I wouldn’t inflict that on a pet I love.
It’s his own dog and he misspelled the name on the tattoo?!
..and perhaps smart enuf not to question a Marine about his tatt. [I know I wouldn’t] ;D
LOL....his ears are probably still ringing. :)
And to whom much is given, much is expected... those in leadership have responsibility to those in their care... it’s about being a good steward of not only creation, but of all the blessings God has given us... even our pets! :)
How do you spell *Dutchess* in Spanish?
I found la duquesa and duchess.......I dunno.
Some people are weird.
[and not in a good way]
Hard to not make a judgement, call, innit?
The article says her name is Duchess and the tattoo says “Dutches”.
Ain’t even gonna try and puzzle that one out.
I don’t know whether that’s a Photoshop, but about 15 years ago a cartoonist buddy o* mine sent me about 100 cartoon ideas he was working on : One o* them was a Biker type with studded vest, etc. walking out o* a tattoo parlor, bearing all kinds o* tattoos and piercings on his ears, cheeks, nose. He carries a tiny dog on one arm, the little mutt ALSO bearing nose rings, ear rings, studs, etc.(”pierced to the max” as he described it. I thought it was perversely hilarious.
Many vets tattoo female dogs who have had their tubes cut. As well, many breeders who enter their dogs into dog shows also tattoo their dogs. I do not quite understand the outrage. If he would not be a tattoo artist then I would understand the outrage.
