I want to paint my magazines

Posted on 04/27/2013 7:27:02 PM PDT by 1rudeboy

Specifically, handgun magazines. Just the bottom, so I can more easily identify what ammo they contain. FMJ vs. JHP, that kind of stuff.

Anyone done this? What sort of paint should I use? I'm worried about the oils and solvents that will come in contact. Not too worried about flaking, as it will happen anyway . . . but I don't feel like repainting often.

Is this even possible? Or should I go with colored tape? Any better ideas?

If you want a paint that will be truly solvent resistant, you’re looking at the Duracoat process, which can be a it involved and expensive. It would probably be cheaper to simply buy a cheap engraving tool or engraving tip for a Dremel at a local hardware store.

Great idea. Here’s what I’d do:

Gold - Self-defence JHP’s, +P’s, etc.
Silver - Standard JHP’s
White - FMJ’s
Black or Khaki - Target rounds, non FMJ.

Two ways: 1. Use different colored tape on the bottom. OR
2. Use felt tip pen to write on a neutral color
tape on the bottom.ie: RN; HP; etc etal.

What are the floorplates made of? Metal or plastic? There are special paints made for plastics. But as NoLibZone said, why not use colored tape instead?

Seriously tho, metal or plastic ?

If the latter, try the pointed tip of a small butane soldering iron .. make up your own dot pattern/code .. barely have to touch it to make a nice little dimple.

Would work in low/no light situations too.

I used acrylic enamel (used for folk art - Walmart or Hobby Lobby will have it - at Walmart it’s in the arts/crafts, not paint section) on my 2-round en-bloc clip for my Garand to separate it from all the 8-rounders. The paint has stayed on for more than 2 years, several competitions, and has not flaked. It is in the grooves on the clip, and the high points I just let rub off.

In this particular case, metal. But my question is general, because I had no clue. I’ve already gotten some great ideas. Thanks, everybody.

Fingernail polish or model airplane paint. Find some on sale in luscious colors. Might as well be stylish. Who’s goin’ to laugh, you’ve got a gun?

Be sure to degrease where the paint touches.
